Can I take the Gamertag of an inactive user?

Just as the title suggests, I've got a Gamertag I'd really like to have, however, someone who is now inactive and seemingly has been inactive for some time holds it. Is there any way I can get this now, perhaps through contacting customer support? Or will
I have to wait until old Gamertags get flushed out again? Also unsure of which category to put this in.

Hi

Just because the account/gamertag is not active on Xbox it may still be active and getting used elsewhere within the Microsoft network just not on Xbox.

Hello, i was looking into a gamertag that i wanted. This gamertag is "Soren" and i researched it and the last time it logged in was in 2006. Now i thought that if it wasn't logged into for 5 years then it was released to others. I was wondering if there

The only way to take it is if the original owner changes it to something else or they do not sign into the account for 5 years (starting in 2016) and it gets freed up. The gamertag system is in use on other Microsoft services, so even if it's not in use
on an Xbox, it may be in use somewhere else.

But the policy states after 2 years you can take the gamertag if inactive?

You would have to come to some kind of agreement with the inactive user to have them pay the fee to change their name so you can get their freed up, old tag. That would be unreliable and potentially risky.

As Genesis1953 stated, there is a policy that could potentially recycle inactive gamertags, but there's no telling how long it will be until you get the taken gamertag you want.

Support is unable to assist with personal gamertag requests, especially with taking them from an inactive account. You will just have to choose something different or stick with your current gamertag for now.

Inactive gamertags I think are deleted every 7 years. At the moment, however, you can still take the name. Microsoft has changed the gamertag system. Then, on your gamertag, a number is #2
