Can I restore controller to factory settings?

My son's XBox one controller buttons are not working in their correct function- he says they are opposite and some don't work at all. I am not familiar with, nor do I play, so I am pretty useless. He says that both controllers are functioning like this.
What is the remedy?

Xbox Controller Bugged

Reset your controller to default settings

Select your controller in the app and choose Configure.

Select Restore defaults. This will return your controller to its original factory configuration.

Factory restore without a controller

My Xbox one had a startup error with code E105. The only solution listed to this on xbox support is a factory restore. I entered troubleshoot mode by holding the bind and eject buttons upon startup. The box labeled continue is highlighted,
but there is not a way to move the highlighted box to the factory reset option. I have tried rebinding my controller, using a different controller, connecting controller via micro usb cable, and connecting a usb keyboard, none of which could move the highlighted
box. Which brings me to my question, is there a way to factory reset without a controller? Can I connect my xbox to my computer? Can I remove a memory unit and erase/replace it? I would try preforming an offline software update but since I cannot move the
highlighted box I would not be able to move it to the offline update option either. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Hi

If you launch the Xbox Accessories app on the console there will be an option in the app to restore defaults on the controller this may be what you are looking for.

Hello Pale,

If not yet attempted, it would be best to try the Offline System Update.

This can be done by following this I need help with system updates on my Xbox One article.

Be sure to select I need to update my console offline.

So like, the above links and troubleshooting steps should walk you through updating your console through a USB if you want to go ahead and do that.

If those steps don't resolve your issue, you might have to get your console repaired by our service center.

This kind of issues is best handled by Xbox technicians, if it's possible for you to send your Xbox for repair I suggest you do.

Have you tried to see which keys don't respond? If the A key works, we can try to restore the console's factory settings. Alternatively you can restore it by connecting the Xbox app to the console, using it as a remote control.
