Can I register an xbox elite controller?

i also wish to register my elite controller but get the error.

xbox one registered ok but elite controller serial number too long so shows invalid.

any help would be appreciated.

My understanding is that you can't register controllers so you have to keep a proof of purchase.

I have the same problem, nothing I've done works for me, anyway my controller should be out of warranty, the grips started to fall down a few weeks ago, I suppose I better get a replacement.
