Can I move my external drive from Xbox One X back to Xbox One?

I've been using my Xbox One X for quite a while now. I don't even remember how I used the Xbox One. I THINK I used the external hard drive with it. I definitely use it with my Xbox One X. Is it possible to use the One X drive with the old One machine
without losing everything that is on there? Can I interchange using it with one and then the other?

    :)

    Choosing a hardrrive

Fair enough, a slow internet connection is as good excuse as any.

Be aware however that while that drive will work on Series X, you won't be able to play Series X games directly from it. Series X games will require faster access and read speeds. My understanding is that the Series X games can be 'backed up' on an external
drive and then need to copied/moved over to either the internal SSD or the External SSD's that will be available for the machine.

The Series X will read and play Xbox One games from an external drive though.

Series X with additional Xbox 4TB drive

    Hi,

When my Xbox One games were upgraded to Series X the system moved them to the drive that can support them - I have the optional Expansion card.

Nothing to stop you moving them yourself before hand. But these games must be moved either way as they won't run on an external USB drive and it's not possible to have a game split up on to different drives.

If you've finished playing a Series X/S game, you can move it back to your external drive for archive purposes - save you downloading/installing it again, but it must be moved back in order to play it.

Okay please read the whole paragraph before reply, this issue is very funky and specific.

Maybe you could move your files to one spot, or maybe... delete the ones that take up the most space?
Cant move files to one spot and no need to delete.

Both external drives are Seagate 8tb external usb 3.0 drives the same ones that Xbox and Seagate partnered with except these are the ones you buy at costco that are typical external drives that are formatted by the Xbox One X to be used on the console.

Storage isnt an issue. Its using the xbox feature to transfer from one drive to the other, and in this case X wont transfer to C.

If this was any other day, I'd drive to the MS store and show them the issue but they're still closed.

Is there anyone from MS that can drop into this thread. My last resort is to call. I will not send the console in because it even says on your online console support that orders can and will be delayed.

Why can't you play series x games on ext ssd?

Get a PS5, problem solved. you can play games on external sdd no problems attached
You cannot store or play PS5 games from an external drive. At least with the Series X/S consoles, you can store the Series X/S games to external drives. You just have to move them to internal storage to play them. You can play PS4 games from an external drive hooked up to a PS5 though, just like you can play Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games from an external drive connected to a Series X/S.

XBox One X and external drive

It was confirmed last night that any current external hard drive will work with the Xbox One X, however you may want to consider moving some of the games you play often over to the Xbox One X internal hard drive as it will probably load games quicker from
internal HDD than your external one.
