It depends on how deep the gouges are in the disc. The actual data is on a thin layer between the plastic underside and the label, so the plastic bit can get scratched without causing any permanent damage to the data. When it gets polished a small amount
of the plastic bit gets removed, so any shallow scratches disappear. In those pro machines they also apply a layer of some sort of ultra fine grain polish...type...stuff. This fills in some of the deeper scratches, but there is a limit to what can be done.
Going by personal experiance it's worth it to get them done by the rental shops, even if it does cost a few bucks. Far better than those home kits anyway!

As Farscape247 said, no electronics manufacturer just throws away a console/TV/PC etc just because they have a scratch or a bit of broken plastic.

Dell sell on PC's that are slight scuffs and marks as "refurbished" at a lower price, they don't just throw them in a skip. Now whether Microsoft should start looking at doing something similar, that's for them to decide. but they certainly wont just give
you a slightly damaged one.

Plus nobody from Microsoft reads these forums, so that's a few minutes of your life wasted.

If the scratch is circular, check the CD tray for foreign matter and possibly a plastic burr on the tray. Use a clean lint free cloth to gently wipe the tray. There could be a grain of sand(or salt) or other similar small object on the tray that is scratching
the disks as the disk comes to a stop on the tray after spinning.

If the scratch is straight across the disk, open the tray and carefully look in the open slot (us flashlight if needed) for a foreign object or plastic burr and wipe clean with a clean lint free cloth.
