Can I connect the same Xbox One to both a monitor and TV and use them separately?

As to if the xbox has to be on, I'm not sure. But if you use a hdmi splitter from your cable box you can watch tv on both the monitor you rxbox is connected to and your separate tv, but this is what I would call mirroring. Your monitor would have tv with
the xbox interface and the tv would be the same as always but both will be watching the exact same channel.. So if you changed the channel on one it changes on the other. They are copying each other. Only way to have both of them on separate channels is to
get another cable box.

the monitor i buy was for use of a computer and i have a aditional speakers for the pc and now i want to use the same monitor for the xbox..

Your monitor should have a 3.5mm audio jack (most do). If you already have speakers that are connected to the audio out on your PC, disconnect them and plug them into the 3.5mm jack on the back of the monitor. This way you can enjoy sound from both your PC and your console via the same set of speakers, like you would if your display was a TV.

I would also increase the audio output on the monitor settings to 100% once the speakers are connected, they're usually defaulted to 50% and then adjust the volume via the speakers themselves.

@ngocphi: Most monitors, even the 'gaming' ones, don't generally have built in speakers.

So I connect the Xbox to one of the inputs and both the monitor and TV to the output? Simple enough. Thanks.

but as far as I can tell your monitor does not support have those inputs.

And since your monitor also doesn't have any speakers it is a bit more difficult.

A tv wouldn't be a,problem since it does have those inputs etc.

Regarding the optical output port, that is normally only necessary to connect to a separate audio device...so it is not needed for everyone.

It may be best to go to a local electronics store that also sells the Xbox and explain them the situation to see what they advise to do.

Can you please provide some additional information on how everything is connected? such as are both console setup in the same room and connected to the same surge protector/power strip.

Both consoles are in the same room on the same wall. Both connected to same power bar. Two separate TVs.
