Can I Change My Gamertag to One Associated With An Old Account?

I've been looking into changing my Xbox gamertag recently, but realized that the gamertag I wanted to change to was already taken, by an old and inactive account that I used to own.

Unfortunately, I no longer use the email address associated with that old account. Is there any way I can use my preferred gamertag?

Each 360 account can be associated with a Live account.

Currently I have:

old 360 account -> associated with my Live account but with the old gamertag

new 360 account -> associated with my Live account but with the new gamertag

The new account got created when I downloaded my profile using my microsoft sign in. The old account was associated with the same microsoft sign in but it didn't recognize my gamertag change. Now it won't let me sign in to live because it asks for my microsoft
sign in details. I'm guessing the sign in fails because it's trying to find the microsoft account associated with the old gamertag.

I either need to somehow transfer my saves over to the new 360 account so I can upload them to the cloud, or I need someway for my Xbox to realize that my gamertag changed on the old account so I can sign into live again with that account.

Swiftie, I'm sorry for the bad news, but unfortunately it's not possible.

After a gamertag is used, it is definitely unusable by any user. That is, it is not possible to use it anymore, under any circumstances.

hi, sorry. i dont want to change my gamertag. i wish to change the email address my gamertag is associated with...?? any ideas. i want to be able to use my windows 8 hotmail account with my old Gamertag

It was my first gamertag that I had on Xbox a couple of years ago I changed it I never stopped using the account so it wouldn’t be associated with an old account

Each gamertag can only be associated with one MS account.

If you want to use your current MS account with your new tag, the old tag will need be associated with a new MS account. -

Once the old tag is associated to a new MS account, you can use your MS account on your new tag.

Any achievements earned/purchased made under the original tag will remain tied/licensed to the original tag.
