Can an external hard drive be the system drive? (Not a flash drive)

Let me go into details first. So my internal 360 hard drive is going bad. Last week I stuck in a 32gb flash drive and I made it my system drive, no issue. Today I bought a 1 TB Toshiba external hard drive. When I hook it up and format it, system recognizes
it, no problem. But when I try to make it my system drive, it tells me that it might suffer from system performance issues and then only gives me 32 gb of accessibility. So can I not make that 1 TB external drive my system drive?

    :)

It has to be an official MS hard drive. External drives will only be seen as flash drives and you will be limited to using only 32gb of space. Well not exactly as a flash drive, but it won't have the system files needed for the game. The only official hard
drives for the Slim are the 250gb and 320gb.

You can't make it your 'system' drive. It should give you all of that 1 TB. Make sure it's format properly. There will be some items that you won't be able to move to your USB drive.

Well...I can make it my system drive, but it won't let me do that AND retain that 1 TB is what you are saying?

It let me make my 32 gb flash drive the system drive with no errors. The 1 TB drive gave me errors and only 32 gb of that space to use.

I appreciate your response Irixion. Just clarifying for my part.

No you can't use the external drive as a system drive unfortunately.

Even if you could you still need your internal HDD for cacheing purposes.

Some games can only use the cache on the internal HDD on not on USB system drives.

    Can't play Xbox Original Games

no only a MS brand hard drive made for your system (clip on for older, internal for slim) flash drives and usb external hard drives will not work as they do not have the emulation software that the MS drives have.
