Can a US Fallout 3 code be redeemed in Canadian account?

Hi. I was gifted a code for Fallout 3 from a friend in the US. I am in Canada and I get a Xbos-0x80150017 region error when trying to redeem the code. That error is associated with account regions.

Are there restrictions in place that are preventing me from redeeming a US code in a Canada account?

It sounds like the region of your account may not be tied to your correct region. Be sure that you're not using a cross-region account, as they aren't supported. Check out the steps on

this page to change the region of your account.

 

I called into support, and they told me that ALL downloadable codes are specific to the country in which it was purchased/issued. I'm surprised that I haven't been able to corroborate this online.

Does that mean I am SOL?

It looks like my account is correctly tied to my region (Canada), though this isn't easy to find online. I do see "CA - Personal account" on my Microsoft billing profile along with my Canadian billing address.

 

Hey TartFiber9135. Sorry any confusion, the codes shouldn't be region specific, but your account does need to be set correctly. Were you able to have Phone support check on the region of your account?

 

I called into phone support again, and again they said that game codes ARE region specific. They also confirmed my account is being Canadian.

 

Hey, Tart! Apologies for any confusion surrounding code availability. The codes given out for the Fallout 4 promotion where you get Fallout 3 for free are not region locked, and can be redeemed by anyone in a region that the specific game is available. The
only codes that are specifically region locked are currency codes, and that's due to different currency being available in different regions. Game codes are not locked like this.

Regarding your physical location: Do you happen to be on the border that might cause some confliction in the system to make it think you are actually in the US? This may lend some insight to the error code you are running into.

 

FYI - the code was successfully redeemed to a US account. It could not be redeemed to a Canadian account, despite several attempts when physically located in both Canada (not near the border) and the US.

Based on this, I have to agree with the phone support that the downloadable game code (at least this one) is region locked.
