so I am trying to buy a game as a gift but the option is not showing up and I have bought many games for friends even ones ive owned so I dont know what to do

the only way of giving out points to another user is if he's on your family pack and your the main man on the family pack, you can give them "allowance"

but if he's not part of the family pack or neither are you, then yes the only way is to give him the prepaid card.

just make sure the card is for the region your friend or family member is in, UK card will not work on a USA card etc.

It may be that not all games can be bought as a gift, or if it is a Pre-Order of a game you have pre-ordered for yourself, the gift option doesn't seem to appear until the release day has passed when it should show the gift option again.

What IRB pointed out is correct. If you're unable to gift a game, that game may not be eligible for gifting or the game was a pre-order at the time.

If you're having trouble gifting a game still, can you please let us know which game this is occurring with and what error message you're seeing?

There is no option to buy an in-game currency as a gift, that will be the only option to buy a game using Microsoft money as a gift.

If you want to give the game as a gift, you can purchase the game from the store, but instead of selecting buy, select buy as a gift.
