People will accept DRM if they see a benefit to it.

Going again to the PC but Steam is not only a marketplace but a piece of DRM. Why people accept it, and indeed love it, is that it offers benefits and they outweigh the negatives.

I buy a Steam game on disc, Arkham Origins for example. I get that game on disc with a box. I install it, enter my key, and I can play. I still have my physical disc but I also now have a digital copy should anything happen to my disc.

Did Microsoft offer that with their DRM for the One?

MS didn't really have a chance to lay out the details before the internet raged out of control and caused the first 180, but they stated that their vision was that you could buy a game on disc, install it, and never had to use the disc again, other benefits
was that you could share the game with 10 "family" members, but treat it as though you were lending them the disc, so if someone was actively playing your game, you could not play the game, and they were going to set it up that you could even sell the game
to authorized dealers. The downside was that it required 24 hour check-ins or the game would become unplayable.

This sparked the "but then I don't really own the game", " what if my internet goes out", "you're putting small gaming shops out of business" and a bunch of other arguments like that, it didn't help that MS changed their story a few times, don't want to
go online? We have a console for that and it's called the 360, and the whole #dealwithit

    Not this again.

Do your really think M.S. was going to gift 9 other people a game after one purchase? Even if M.S. was up to for it, the publishers wouldn't have nothing to do with it. Take Share Play for PS4; a hour of sharing before you start over. Activision pulled
    Ghosts and Advanced Warfare from using it to. Even if only one person could play it at a time, it would would essentially cause companies to bleed money. Take Ryse for instance, from what I've heard it could be beat in about 8 hours and had little replay value;
do you not think think there was already "gaming clubs" popping up to "share" games if their "vision" came to fruition? Their vision was going to be a extended demo, just enough to give you a taste and make you buy the game...I'd bet a paycheck on it.

24 hour check-in? Pfft! I may may have went the idea of discs as a delivery method (Save my freaking bandwith! Lol.), and not having to switch discs, if it was a 7 day check-in.

Their original vision would have been retail suicide...they knew that shortly after the announcement and changed accordingly.

    Peace, J.R.

Not looking to start an argument over it, I never really saw the point of arguing over something that never saw the light day, but the point is that MS tried to do something different on a console, and got shutdown before even having the chance to explore
    the possibilities.

Not arguing...well maybe a little. Lol. Like I mentioned, if it was a 7 day check-in I think more of us would have at least listened to a new idea. 24 hours? That's just too little time...what if I was on a submarine or on vacation for a week? ;-)

I was at least looking forward to what the end result would have been(even though I agree that what MS was planning would have had way more limitations that they were hoping), if it didn't work out, then I'd at least be confident that MS would have changed
it to where it would have worked, or if it was complete failure, a complete overhaul into the console we have today.

End of the day, maybe I'm just getting old, but I like seeing new, even unconventional, features and offerings in my technology, otherwise things become stagnant for me.

not to chime in.. but has ANYONE HERE.. EVER.. not been able to gain access to ONLINE for more than 24 hours at a time?? AND the check in was a ping.. we are talking KBs in info.. enough for a crappy 2G dial up cellphone service to just ping your info and
    move on...

same old story.. complain about needing to be online... while online...

and yes.. as far as anyone could tell.. the family plan was...

10 people in your plan... at any one time, any of those 10 people had access to our online games library... if someone was already using a game from that library, no one else would be allowed to access it... BUT at the same time, YOU, being the owner of
said library could access any game you wanted at any time...

Yes. When building a\ new housing estate near me the developers cut through underground lines. It was an old factory site
and things weren't where they were meant to be.

It was over a week before the phones in my area were up and running again.

For that time if my console had been a One, with that check-in, I wouldn't have even been able to play a single player game.

That the connection is working now, does not mean that some act of god or idiocy of man is not going to mess it up for a length of time.

As to the family plan I simply can't believe that Microsoft were going to get the big name publishers to let their games be a part of it. They complain about used games allowing one copy to pass through several hands, were they really going to jump on-board
    for the digital equivalent?

Heck I remember on this very forum how people were posting threads to find 'friends' in order to get game share groups going.

    @ Vay..

well instead of kids crying about change... and scared of it at the same time... we will never know will we..

think about what MS wanted at the reveal... compared to what people want now..

    so eerily similar huh??

no disc needed for play, signing in anywhere to play your games with no disc, family sharing, digital gifting/trading/selling..cheaper games...

all because.. and lets be honest... you had to get on the internet at least once every 24 hours.. TO PLAY A VIDEO GAME

  10. People like change when it benefits them. Microsoft failed spectacularly in explaining what benefits the 24 hour check-in would bring. However....

There is no reason at all the family share could not have been implemented without a 24 hour check-in, I've yet to have anyone give a good reason as to why the two had an unbreakable bond.

Play with a disc. Again why did this have such a strong tie to the 24 hour check-in? Simply go the PC route and require a unique key.

Everything Microsoft wanted to do with the One could easily have been done without the need to check-in every 24 hours.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but if you are your sarcasm is appreciated. It's ridiculous that the disk is required every single time you want to play a game.
