Buffering

Why is there so much buffering on the XB1? It doesn't matter what app I use; twitch, youtube etc, there is alot of buffering to the point that it's umwatchable. I'm running a wired connection with a download speed of 96.52 Mbps and latency of 156 seconds.
I've had the XB1 since November 2014 and this has always been the case. It doesn't happen on my other consoles or phone when it uses wi-fi to play online media.

I wonder how many paying customers would keep on using Netflix... if they decided to cap the download speed at a unsustainable level. NETFLIX OUT NOW IN NEW ZEALAND (AND AUSTRALIA?) XD

My household only has ADSL which averages 10.9 down and 0.9 up. I watched Narnia this morning something like a 2 hour video, you would expect with my speeds and watching it in Dolby HD there would be buffering every 5 minutes, but throughout the 2 hour video
there was NO buffering. Now if I tried to watch a 2 hour video on Youtube there would be buffering here and there. Been also watching episodes of Lightning Point and Stargate Atlantis, all of which had NO buffering while watching them. So far I'm liking it.

Hi HOTBULLETOWEN. It isn't to do with my broadband or internet connection. Had mentioned my set up in my post.

 

Buffering has to do with your internet speed try a reset of your router or modem, for a wired connection your latency seems high.

 

I don't leave the router on overnight. It is always turned off so the speed should reset itself on router reboot. I have a decent enough internet speed and I know that buffering has a lot to do with the speed being offered by the ISP (a general surfing speed
of 2Mb isn't going to cut it for gaming that's why I have 150Mb for streaming services). I also know about Line Attenuation, the physical properties of cabling affecting carrier signal (switch to fibre it's quicker and less 'noisy'), distance from the Exchange,
the way i physically connect etc, but I suspect the reason is tied uo in Microsoft hardware because it never happens on any of my other devices and consoles - only the XB1, and there are a number of similar observations being noted around the web. I do know
that downloads take so long because Microsoft artificially restrict the bandwidth so I was wondering if something similar was happening. I'm not prepared to sit in callcentre queues wracking up phonebills to my ISP though, just to find out that they are delivering
the speeds that they are charging me for. A router issue or ISP issue are always blamed. Sorry but they are.

 

Line Attentuation: Line attentuation is in relation to loop loss on the line. The further a person is away from the Exchange the higher the attenuation figure will be as the signal loss increases. The lower the attentuation the better chance of getting faster
speeds.

SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio): The SNR can only be measured from the property, behind the socket, and therefore to be measured properly may need an engineer with the equipment, and therefore requires an appointment and results in a call out fee (not ideal).
The SNR figure can fluctuate on a day to day basis and may vary depending on local equipment, conditions and interference. An upgrade in speed often causes the SNR to decrease by up to 5dB. The higher the SNR figure the better the line quality.

Line Length: Ideally a line length should be below 3.5Km from the Exchange to get a 2Mb connection. The general public cannot check this themselves unless they use a Sams checkers.

Downstream Attentuation: 0-43dB = 2Mbps, 43-60dB = 1Mbps, >60dB = 512kbps

Downstream SNR: Should be at least 10dB to get an adsl line - ideally above 12dB. Anything less than this and you experience frequent disconnections and other problems.

6db or less will result in no router sync or intermittent sync problems.

7-10dB is fair but does not leave room for variations in conditions.

11-20dB is good with little or no sync problems

20-28dB is excellent

28dB or above is heaven for gamers

Routers should not be left on 24/7 because Exchange equipment uses the average calculated from connections to find and stabilise internet speeds. It cannot do this for a router that it recognises as being on only once. In some instances the disconnection
can be forced.

More About Attenuation: Measures how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem.

20dB and below is outstanding

20-30dB is excellent

30-40dB is very good

40-50dB is good

50-60dB is poor and will experience connectivity issues

60db or above is bad and disconnections assured.

Hi, how was this resolved, my X1 is buffering, and it's getting worse. It's just watching tv, not even streaming.
