Broken Xbox One controller - Detective wanted -

My brother has an Xbox one and 2 wireless controllers for it. He had a chargeable battery pack he got when he first purchased the console, and he had been using it with a charger cable simultaneously while playing games for a while. One day, we both noticed
the controller would be dying/losing battery life while we had it plugged into the console. We came to realize, the charger cable was having trouble staying connected unless we tilted it at a certain angle. This worked for a while, but I noticed the battery
pack was no longer receiving charge when it was plugged up. It would keep the controller alive, but the battery pack would no longer charge. So we had to sit close to the TV to play whatever game we were playing, which was fine... for a while. Eventually,
the problem progresses more and more and I come to realize that not even normal batteries will work in the controller anymore. One day, on a sheer hunch, I tried to see if I could update the controller online. I went to the settings, and tried to update the
controller.... but it kept disconnecting while the update was going through. Eventually, over the course of almost an hour, I couldn't get the controller to turn on anymore.... at all.... and the update was stuck at the same point where it was trying to connect
to the controller.

My question is this: Does anyone have any clue what the REAL problem might have been?

My brother insists that when I tried to update the controller, it essentially broke the controller for good. Even though we both knew either the controller or the charger cable was having issues working, as far as hardware goes. I'm not saying it couldn't be
the software update that did it in, but I highly doubt that was the sole problem if it was giving us trouble for a while now. He is out of a $70 controller, and I feel for him, but I refuse to simply take the blame just because no one wanted to look into it.
He believes that because I tried to update the controller's software, and the controller disconnected while trying to update, that the controller is pretty much ***.

Any help is appreciated

I've got the exact same problem, it wont turn on at all unless its wired but even when I connect it I have to tilt it.

 

It could be any of those 3 things mentioned. The play-and-charge cable might be broken, the micro usb port could be faulty, or a bad update. I had similar issues and in my case(s) it was the cable itself and also a bad update that broke one controller(only
worked when plugged in after update). I had received a replacement controller with a bad micro usb port as well, so test it on a spare controller.

 

To me, it seems like a hardware fault. Mainly because it was working if you tilted it a certain way, that tells me that something is probably broken. Have done it with a few phones, and that was from using it while it was charging, and I somehow mess up
the connection... probably bent it out of shape or something like that, meaning it was no longer able to form a solid connection

I'd then say that the update didn't work because the controller was broken already.

That is just a logical guess though, as I have no personal experience with this issue

What you can do is try the battery pack on another controller and see if that works and is able to charge and hold that charge. If it can, then you'll know that its the controller that is bust and most likely needs to be replaced

 

I think I've discovered my problem and I think it's the battery and the charger. I changed my rechargeable battery and it works perfectly wireless but when I plug it in it sometimes disconnects.
