Bricked Xbox One Controller after Update Failed

    Hello everyone,

As the title states, my Xbox prompted me to update my controller when I plugged in my Beats Solo 2 (its a post 2015 controller so I don't need an adapter). The Controller was plugged in Via USB, batteries were off, and connection was not broken. At
around 78% the update stops and said it failed to update. My Controller then started Flashing sequentially, and would not sync with the USB connected.

    My trouble shooting steps:

    1. I turned off my xbox, plugged in another working, un-frayed, un-crinked, usb cable. same thing is still happening. (Xbox controller turns on, vibrates, but doesn't sync after being plugged in)
    2. I then unplug and disconnect the usb CABLES, put some fresh Duracell batteries on my controller and turn it on. The controller turns on, the light remains flashing. I hit the sync button on my Xbox, then I hit the sync button on my controller (the
sync button didn't cause a change in the flashing light, the way it would when it would normally sync)
    3. I then came to the xbox one support forums, read and performed all of the actions and procedures stated by microsoft's support team (hard power off on console, sync with different cables, holding down sync buttons, etc.) I also tried some unorthodox
successful methods of troubleshooting with no avail (spamming the sync button on console while controller is connected via USB, connect batteries then usb cable together, start xbox after hard shutdown while holding the xbox button on controller connected
      via USB)
    4. Borrowed a friends controller, synced perfectly fine wirelessly and wired using all the USB cables previously stated
    5. I then tried connecting my Controller to my windows 10 PC to see if it gets recognized as a plug-and-play adapter to no avail. (when I plugged it in to my computer, the flashing light on the controller remained the same. However, the PC did not make
a sound as it would when you plug in a USB device, and there was no new device in the Device Manager)
After step 5 I came to the conclusion that my once perfectly working Xbox One controller, has now been Bricked due to a failed update (that wasn't needed as, my other headsets worked perfectly fine before with no update prompt). If anyone has had a
similar problem, or think that they might be able to find a solution to my $60 plastic Paperweight, please let me know as I would greatly appreciate any help.

P.S. Don't comment with obvious solutions, as i've tried most if not all, the solutions on the Support page with no luck.

    THANKS IN ADVANCED!! =D

    :)

  2. Controller bricked after failed update.

Tried to update my last decent working controller and the updated failed. This turned off the controller and now it won't turn on. Support had suggested such gems as "did you try putting in fresh batteries"...yes and tried using the cable with and without
batteries and charge pack. It was also suggested that I try to sync it with my XBox. Um...It won't turn on!

Has anyone found a workaround to bring this thing back to life?

XBox supports final suggestion was that they would very graciously send me a new controller...for $60!

    So frustrated!

  3. Controller bricked after failed update.

Its sad when you cant even update your own controller out of fear of a meltdown and sadly enough these things cost 60 bucks which is pretty expensive in my book

I have had this too, did all your steps as well. If I find a fix i will let you know, but seems very tedious to have an update that totally bricks the controller. I'm trying to play Fallout 4, I have new mods awaiting Bricked Xbox One Controller after Update Failed :(

just got the same problem but with the original controller, but the difference is that mine turned off as soon as I hit update and now wont power on whatsoever. So I guess I'm screwed.

  6. I have had the exact same issue with my 2014 controller, however it turned off after the update and now will not turn on, similar to deano89's problem, I will be in touch if I find a resolution however my best advice is to contact Microsoft support team
and push for a free replacement if your controller is still under warranty, if not push anyway as this is at no fault of your own and Microsoft have us by the balls here

Xbox one controller "bricked" after failed update.

My first step in troubleshooting would be to remove the batteries and disconnect from USB, and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. Then put the batteries back and try again, see if it'll sync up.

I would also see if it'll connect to another device, either computer or mobile device via USB, if you have that available, to verify if it's an issue with it connecting or an issue between the controller and device you're connecting it to specifically.

For clarification, were you trying to update via Windows 10 with the Xbox Accessories App or on Xbox One?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have tried disconnecting the battery pack, replacing with new batteries. Having no batteries in and connecting directly with a usb. All methods have the same outcome and the light remains flashing no matter what method of power
is used. I have tried plugging it into my computer with windows 10 aswell as i read some folk are able to restart the firmware update from the windows accessories app there but that didnt work either as when the pad is plugged into the usb, the guide button
light keepa flashing and the pad isnt getting the chance to be recognised.
