Borrowing disc based games

Hello!

I just borrowed a disc based game from a friend and was wondering, when I return the game and want to buy a copy for myself, do I have to get a disc copy or can I digitally purchase it without having to redownload it?

I would love to get an answer soon, thanks!

Also tried installing the game without the disc, then borrowing the disc again to try and play. That didn't work either. Think that rules out a disc drive error.

Disc based games

That is correct, Errick. Even after installing disc-based games. You do still have to insert the disc each time you want to play.

You can buy the game digitally and you won't have to redownload it. There is no difference between disc based or digitally purchased games.

Except, boid, PS4 games will be disc based, not license based. I can buy a PS4 game, let my friend borrow it, he can play it with no restrictions, and give it back to me, with no restrictions. With license based games, I can only transfer the license once.
Like a Windows OS.

Without being pedantic, technically speaking there is no such thing as a 'digital version' of an Xbox One game. Both the disc and the digital versions are the same. What you buy is a digital license. Of course, once you have the license you won't need
the disc.

If you borrowed your friends game on disc, installed it, then decided you also wanted this game, you just buy it from the Xbox Store. As you've already installed the game from disc you won't need to download anything, other than any updates as normal.

The Xbox 360 had separate digital and disc based games, the Xbox One does not.

What do you mean by the Xbox One does not have any digital version of games? Everything stored on the Xbox One is digital. On the non-disc based games the license is stored on the HDD while on the disc based games the license is stored on the disc.
