Blu-ray player app outputs dark picture in SDR with UHD-BD

The Blu-ray player app no longer performs proper conversion from HDR to SDR, outputting a very dim picture if connected to a non-HDR capable display. It leaves the picture dark, dim and unwatchable.

There's a test to showcase this problem:

On Sony UHD-BD titles, you can access a series of test patterns by entering 7669 (i.e. SONY) in the top menu of the disc. This will run through color primaries and secondaries for BT.709 and DCI P3 at 100 nits, followed by a few grayscale bars ranging from
    0 through 10,000 nits.

In the past, playing back these in SDR would clip the range at 400 nits, which is a reasonable target luminance. Now, it extends to 6,000 nits, suggesting that no conversion to SDR is being performed or that it is done incorrectly.

I'm not surprised – all generations of Xbox have had problems of some kind with picture quality – but as a broadcast professional and videophile I'm still disgusted. Microsoft should have far higher competence in programming its hardware and not repeat mistakes.
Especially given that the video hardware in the Xbox One is highly capable.

I'm using an Xbox One S and the settings I've tested for output are:

    Resolution: 1080p

    24 Hz and 50 Hz allowed/not allowed

    YCbCr 4:2:2 allowed/not allowed

    Connection: Auto-detect/forced to HDMI

    Color space: Standard

Color depth: 36 bpp (12 bpc) and 24 bpp (8 bpc)

And of course, changing these settings back and forth did not solve anything.

The problem could be EDID dependent, for instance it might be possible the Blu-ray app does things properly if connected to an HDR capable display with "Allow HDR" disabled on the system. I don't have the means to test this unless
I lug my Xbox One S to work and waste time I should be spending on my job. But my assumption is that SDR output is broken across the board.

    :)

Incorrect HDR to SDR mapping when playing UHD blu-ray on 4K TV without HDR

I own a Philips 48PUS7600 TV, which is a 4K TV without HDR support. My Xbox is the One X Scorpio Edition.

When I play a UHD HDR blu-ray, the picture is way too dark and colors look all washed out.

I am wondering if the blu-ray app is able to do correct HDR to SDR color mapping? Is this even technically possible?

Are there any settings I could change on the Xbox or my TV to fix this?

If anyone else has similar experiences please let me know!

  3. Standard Blu-ray not being up-converted

When playing a UHD Blu-ray, I get 4K resolution. Netflix is in 4K. When I play a game or any other app, the output to my TV is still in 4K (so the Xbox is up-converting). However when I play a standard Blu-ray, the output resolution changes to 1080p.

Incorrect HDR to SDR mapping when playing UHD blu-ray on 4K TV without HDR

Yes HDR to SDR tone mapping is possible, Apple use it extensively on the AppleTV 4K.

The launch firmware of the Xbox One X did not feature HDR to SDR conversion but the most recent firmware update before the end of 2017 did add support for this, though the Blu-ray app has so many issues it's possible they broke something else along the way.

Set your Xbox video settings display output to 8-bit (standard color space) and under advanced enable YCC 4:2:2 support this is the more important setting as it's actually Blu-ray specific. Assuming your firmware is up to date the Blu-ray player app should
output SDR, if it doesn't then it's either a bug in the app or some combo of the display/console.

Take a look at this :

I have the exact same problem with HDR.

Moreover, in games, I see no differences with the HDR feature activated or deactivated

Are you playing these movies from a 4k UHD Blu Ray or streaming service? If from disk, have you updated the Blu Ray player app on the Xbox?

4k problems ono xbox one s

I love everything about the Xbox S except for the 4k blue ray player. I bought 2 4k UHD disks, The Revenant and Star Trek Into Darkness. The Revenant had major audio sync problems which just come and go. Star Trek Into Darkness would not even load. Returned
it and the second one would not load. At that point I started searching the Internet and found that many are having issues with the 4k blue ray player. Here is a thread at AVS detailing many of the issues. www.avsforum.com/.../2481633-xbox-one-s-uhd-blu-ray-player-aug-2016-a.html

Hopefully Microsoft will be able to fix this quickly.
