Blu-ray app distorts image when playing DVDs but Blu-ray is OK

When playing DVDs the app switches the TV to 1080p even though it's only a 720p LCD TV. This distorts the image. This only started since the update on 8/6/2016. The UI displays at the correct resolution so this is a problem with the Blu-ray app.

I would check out the Xbox page for Blu-ray playback regarding regions. But yes, your Xbox One can certainly play DVD and Blu-ray movies.

Have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it after a reboot?

 

Yes, I tried this twice. I even unplugged the console and TV then deleted and reloaded the app. No change. The App always tries to switch the TV to 1080p even though it does not support that resolution. It only started doing this after the last update.
The strange thing is that it only does this with DVDs not Blu-rays. Blu-rays play at the standard 720p

 

have you tried setting the xbox one to 720 in the video settings instead of auto?

it may be trying to go to 1080 in auto mode.

In settings turn off auto detect and choose 720P?

 

So I tried this today. Went to Settings>Display & Sound>Video Output. Went to Advanced video settings and selected HDMI instead of Auto-detect. Then I selected 720p for TV resolution. Saved. Turned off the console (and unplugged it) deleted the Blu-ray App
and reinstalled. Played a DVD - No change! It still attempts to switch the TV to 1080p distorting the picture. There is one change though - now it switches to 1080p for some Blu-ray Discs as well. So things have gotten a little worse. Luckily I can still
bring back the TV picture by quitting the Blu-ray app. Games and streaming videos are not affected.

Super odd issue you're running into. Couple things to try, do you have a different HDMI cable you can test to see if perhaps it's sending a faulty display signal to your console? If not, can you try plugging your console into a different display port to
see if there's any change? Let us know

 

I tried a brand new HDMI cable. No change. DVDs are still switched to 1080p and are distorted. I need to make one correction though. A disc I thought was Blu-ray that also showed this problem was actually a DVD - not a Blu-ray., so the symptoms haven't
changed. Blu-ray Discs are not affected and continue to be played properly at 720p.

Let's try clearing your
Persistent Storage for the Blu-Ray app and follow it up by Power Cycling your Xbox One three times in a row. Once you give that a try, please try playing a DVD again to see if there is any change with that. Also, if you haven't tried, please give another
HDMI input on your TV a try to see if that helps

 

I cleared the Persistant Storage and power cycled (and unplugged) the console three times in a row. No change. DVDs are still playing at 1080p instead of 720p. Blu-rays are OK at 720p. I did this whole procedure twice, just to be sure. I wanted to make
sure the TV wasn't the problem, so I unplugged the HDMI cable from the rear of the Xbox One and plugged it into an Xbox 360 S that was set to 720p on HDMI. I played the same DVD on the 360 and it played perfectly on the TV with the same input. The Blu-ray
app just seems to be over riding what ever the system resolution is set to and tries to play DVDs at 1080p.

No, this is the only one with an HDMI input.

 

Can you clarify the make and model of the television you're using currently?

Also, do you possibly have a friend with a TV you can test?

 

The TV is a ViewSonic N3250w set, Model No: VS10769-1M, Mfg: 8/2005. There''s no one locally that I would drag my xbox over to plug into their TV.

Wouldn't a better solution be giving users the ability to 'Rollback ' problematic apps? It's not part of the O/S so it shouldn't affect anything. Isn't that the point of it being an app in the first place? It would also be better for you folks because
then you could easily determine if a problem is app related or not, wouldn't it?
