Black screen and hard reset

Hello There!

About a month ago (near the end of August) there was a system update (can't recall which specific one) after which my Xbox only turned on to a black screen. (It would still show the green start-up screen, but would immediately go to black after finishing up.) From what I've heard, this problem isn't uncommon. Many consoles have been afflicted by this glitch.

To fix this issue, most forums recommend doing a hard factory reset, pushing both the xbox button and the eject button or the eject button and the bind button while turning on the console and waiting for about 10-15 second before hearing two distinct tones to force a hard reset and open a sort of ‘settings menu’. However, this doesn’t seem to work on my console. I’ve tried both options multiple times, and I’ve never heard more than one tone, after which my xbox simply turns itself off again or becomes non-responsive.

I’m desperate for a solution. Its been over a month now since I’ve last been able to use my console, and frankly, not being able to play is really starting to pi*s me off.

Hopefully someone among you can come up with a viable solution. I’ll be glad to hear it.

As I understand it, the only way to update my Xbox offline is to do a hard reset. As the hard reset was the problem to begin with, I don't think its going to work. If you have any further suggestions, please let me know. I'll keep trying to reset, but at this point it kinda feels like beating a dead horse.

I understand, unfortunately, at the moment these are the only solutions that would solve the problem, as normally access to the factory reset would be done by the console itself in its settings, but as you do not have access due to the black screen, it would be necessary for the procedure above to work for access to the troubleshooting window to appear.

- I believe that in your case only a repair will fix the problem.

Hi Mateus,

Thank you for the speedy reply. I've tried you solution this morning, but to no avail. As before my Xbox simply turns itself off again after I've pressed both the bind and eject button and turned the Xbox back on. I didn't even hear a chime this time.

I'm going to try to update my Xbox offline, as you suggested next. Hopefully this will prove to be more succesful. If not... well, I don't know.

We appreciate your coming to the Xbox community, and we're sorry many are having this issue. Normally what would solve this problem would be the solution mentioned by you, as you said when doing the commented procedure, the system would display a troubleshooting screen where you would be able to initiate a factory reset for the console which would solve the problem.

Anyway, I suggest you try the solutions below one more time because only then the problem can be solved.

Solution 1:

1. Turn off Xbox One.

2. Unplug power.

3. Plug the power back to Xbox One 30 seconds later.

4. Press and hold Bind and Eject at the same time (don't release).

5. Press and release the Power button, and then you will hear the startup chime.

6. When you hear the second startup chime, you can release the bind and eject buttons.

7. Select Reset this Xbox on the screen.

8. Select Keep games and apps.

Solution 2:

If the above solution doesn't work, try updating your console offline by following the instructions in the article below.

The only time I did a hard reset was after loading the Titanfall Beta, black screen.
