Hello Linus

When you get to turn console off or controller you are holding Xbox button on controller. If you can access the Settings:

Go to settings

then down to system, then console info

Select reset console two options pop up select Keep games and apps

As for any save data yes it does get deleted off the console but with an Xbox live subscription it is all saved to the cloud also. So when you start a game up it will say syncing data and will retrieve your latest save data from there. If you are unable
to access the settings
use this link.

Step one select I need to update console offline

step 2 select console

Skip step 3

Step 4 is what you want to do on the console, If you get the troubleshoot menu to pop up you will select reset console and same option as above.

A factory reset did the trick in the end.

For now at least.

Still don't know the cause but I'm happy enough.

I suppose I am worried that if I factory reset and none of my games work then I'm in real trouble!

As long as you choose the option to keep games and apps you won’t need to install or download those. Your game save data will be removed from the Xbox but will sync back from cloud when you next launch the game.

I personally do not work for Microsoft or any organisation associated with Microsoft, like you I’m just a gamer.

I believe that these days if you call Xbox support you can opt to not use the automated service and may be able to arrange a call back, if they call back is another matter.

I'm sorry to hear that is happening. By any chance have you tried anything to see if the dashboard would show up again?

I would suggest to try the steps on our article

On here you're going to choose as follows:

Step 1: 'I need to troubleshoot a system update error.'

Step 2: Choose your
Xbox

Step 3: Choose 'I'm experiencing a startup issue'

Step 4: Choose which screen you get stuck on and continue with the steps provided.
