Battlefield 4 PING

Hi guys,

Im kind of new to BF4. How does PING work? I have read that a low ping is better, so does this mean 1 bar on the ping status of a game is better than 5 bars? I would have thought more bars meant a better Ping.

Also what is PING exactly and how do I check it what my ping is?

I run ADSL internet at home, would cable work better?

Don't assume they use the same server banks. I was getting 15ms on the Titanfall beta but the best i get on Battlefield 4 is 30ms on a real good day. Now the BF4 ping I got was read off the battlelog website server browser list.

Titanfall, as far as I know and as my ping would suggest are using Microsoft servers which have a base here in Ireland. Battlefield uses a server bank in the Netherlands I believe, but correct me if I'm wrong but again my ping would suggest they are further
away.

I don't think your latency will effect battlefield 4.

First of all when you do a network test it pings a server in Seattle, Washington, USA

If you are in the UK it will have a ping of over 150ms. I don't know if all games use the server in seattle though. They could have servers all over the world but only test using the Seattle server?

But battlefield 4 uses EA's servers so the network test wont be pinging those. It's safe to assume that all platform versions of battlefield 4 will use EAs servers in a different location than those used for xbox live so the pings will be different.

 

First off the 'bars' on BF4 is the quality of connection (mainly ping time), the higher the bars the better - this is a common way games use to show server connectivity.

Ping is the time it takes your computer (or Xbox in this case) to receive a response from a remote server, so as you can imagine the quicker the better, do a test on SpeedTest.net... if your Ping is over 100ms then there may be issues, under 100 is fine,
50 or less is awesome and that's what you want for FPS.

So you obviously want as low a ping as possible (although is mainly due to ISP and outside telecommunications network), the game bars treat as a separate entity.

 

My PING came up as 133. Obviously this is high and explains the **** connections i get. How can I fix this? How do I get a good PING for FPS?

 

That Speedtest and Ping test only "basically" tell you what you have. Youd have to ping your Xbone and the dedi server to get the exact measures, but yes, lower ping is better.

 

Speedtest is always within 15% accuracy range, good enough for the general user to guage their connection. The best way is also very simple - type "ping www.google.com" into DOS. Also 'tracert' will check the number of hops (servers you go through to reach
the destination) - more of these slow your ping.

@WEBERXXX if your xbox is directly connected to your router, and the router direct to your master telephone socket then it's an issue with the line, ISP or distance from exchange - anyway contact them saying you need to get your connection configured for
gaming (it's a common request), sometimes this can make a significant difference.

 

*BTW by saying 15% accuracy range I mean that's the most it can ever be out.

 

^^That doesnt sound right. What if the persons "normal" server (Hop or whatever) is 100 miles away, but the dedi they connect with is 200 miles away, in the other direction? I dunno if you can even check speedtest for the Xbone to the dedi (BF4 servers)?
So if you test your laptops connection to your hop/normal server, itll be only 15% difference for the Xbone to game dedi? And that could be 15% better?

 

Speedtest.net is always within 15% accuracy of the top end (e.g. speed test result shows as 17Mbps then your true speed could be up to 20Mbps).

15% stuff is entirely unrelated to 'hops'. You open MS-DOS and type 'tracert www.example.com', it then returns a list of how many servers you travel though to get to the website server - you can then judge (from the returned IP addresses) if you're going
direct with few 'hops' or if you're going all over the place resulting in many 'hops' diminishing your ping.

The internet works by going through servers in all kinds of directions, trying to find the 'best path'. Distance in this case is irrelevant compared to the number of servers you go though - speed of light and all that.
