[Basic Request] Ability to partition our external Hard Drives

When I bought my Xbox One, I was excited beyond belief. I played it and filled the 500GB internal drive that came with the console
extremely quick. So, I sought out an external drive.

After a while of searching I was going to buy a 1TB drive for the console, but instead bought a 2TB drive, rationalizing it in my mind by saying I would partition it 1TB for my Xbox One & 1TB for my PC, since I needed an external Hard drive for my PC anyway.

How disappointed was I that when I received my External HDD, that I was forced to use it all for the console and no option whatsoever to use a partitioned drive. I tried for hours with different partition sizes, and even formats, but it would always want
    the whole thing.

What I feel should be a basic feature on any console, it missing. Please Microsoft, in your next update, give us this option? I am not the only one wanting this, and many have been bothered by it since launch. We need this and I really hope this will be
    added..

    :)

    External hard drive formatting question

From this link it appears there is no way to partition the External hard drive and use it for installed games.

How do I get more storage on my xbox one?

Buy an external hard drive with the following:

    • It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.
    • It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity.
    • It has a partition. Typically, drives come with a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

[Basic Request] Ability to partition our external Hard Drives

Brilliant idea and it was the first thing I thought when I bought an external drive. Ultimately we decided to use it for the pc. Not even half of it is being used. What a pity.

Your drive has to be formatted for what you are using it for.

Thinking you would use half the drive for the PC and the other half of the drive for your XBox ONE shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what drives are and how they work.

The reason you partition a drive is to protect your drive if part of it ever becomes corrupt.

What you have suggested is as smart as thinking you'll use have the drive for your Wii U and half the drive for your XBox.

Oh? So the only reason you partition a drive is for recovery purposes? I am assuming you are trolling, because your comment is most illogical. "A fundamental misunderstanding of what drives are and how they work". I have been working in the tech industry
for over 10 years, and continue to do so this day. I have worked with Hard drives quite extensively, so I am very familiar with them.

Partitioning a drive is useful for many many more reasons than *just* recovery. If I partition my 2TB drive into a 1TB NTFS partition, and a 1TB ext4 partition on linux, Windows will only see one partition and think it a single drive. Because windows can't
(natively) read ext4, it would not show up in explorer. If I boot into Linux and plug it in, it will also show the ext4 'drive' as a usable drive. I can (and have) safely used both of these partitions on both systems flawlessly.

Don't know where you get your info from, but it is wrong. As for the topic at hand, PS3, PS4 and even Xbox 360 all had the capability to use the "first" partition on the drive .If you formatted it before hand, it worked flawlessly. Even that would be preferable
    to the current standing.

You can fill up your 500GB HD on the ONE pretty quickly since only 361GB is available for your game saves.

You don't have enough games to be in any danger of filling that though which begs the question what would you need a Partitioned shared drive for.

Perhaps the answer is in the rep.
