    Is there any option that allows basic online gaming on an xbox?

    We've had the xbox for around 18 months and I'm sure I was able to sign up for a 6 month and then a 12 month online account that didn't seem that expensive - I know one of them was ~£16 - I think it was an Xbox Live or possibly one of the Silver/Bronze packages.

    It allowed online gaming, but we weren't paying a premium for a big games archive that we didn't use - this is 99% for my 9yr old son to play Roblox (free) and Minecraft (already purchased). This feels like a huge step backwards to make online activity
    a "premium" feature?!?

    After several hours with xbox support, trying to explore options for allowing basic online gameplay - i.e. on games that we've bought and only servers that are free to all other platforms, but no luck - they're saying the only option is to pay nearly £100/year
    for Live Gold and it looks like Xbox is blocked from all online gaming unless you pay the money.

    Even if I thought it was good value to pay... it won't let him activate Xbox Live Gold (we tried to use one of the 1 month membership codes) - it fails with the message "your too young for this" as it gives him access to inappropriate content and there doesn't
    seem to be a lower Xbox Live membership like the annual one that just expired - that only gives him access to the two online games he wants.

    His sisters both play the same games on Android tablets and consoles on another TV in the house, where cost was a tiny fraction to buy (the games and the console!)... and there's no subscription fee, so we have an obvious solution, I just feel bad for my
    son who is rapidly resenting an xbox that he was so proud of before.

    It seems that this is becoming an issue for everybody in his school as their old age-appropriate Live accounts are expiring and Microsoft is trying to force people into more expensive subscriptions and blocking their younger users - so it would be great
    to have a solution for all the parents of his friends too!

    Failing that, I want to be sure that we're the first to sell our console before the value crashes due to all the kids selling them!

    Gamerscore is basically achievement points that you get by playing your games. You can sign up for Gold and go online with no Gamerscore. Gamerscore is a measure of your "achievements" through both offline and online play.

    Now now, if they guy wants to waste his money who are we to dissuade him? Seriously though rent it or get a better game to utilize your new Gold membership.

    Basically that it was a code. Keep in mind the 2 day trials don't show as a Gold subscription. They only give you access to some benefits of online multiplayer and don't work with all games.
