The balance that expires earliest is always taken first.

Yes, I understand that the Terms and Conditions state how long the code is valid for and if the balance had expired a month ago I would understand but as it's just two days it seems a bit harsh to not extend the lifetime of the balance. Also, it isn't particularly
easy to find when your balance is actually due to expire.

You can use your promotional balance before it expires to buy apps, games, music, and more at any of the following stores:
Windows Apps
Windows Games
Xbox Games
Movies and TV
Music

It would have been added as part of your Microsoft account balance. So if it's not in your balance now, check your transactions after that deposit to see if it shows it was used on a purchase or if it expired (funds from the Rewards program expire after 90 days).
