    Backwards Compatibility

First, I apologize if this is something I could have found elsewhere. I've done a good chunk of searching, found a number of solutions that
seem to answer my question here, and discovered that they're seven or 8 years old and no longer really apply, apparently.

I'm trying to run the Platinum Hits version of Morrowind. I've found discussions saying that the Game of the Year edition works, and unfortunately that isn't what I ended up with. The error I'm getting is simply, 'The game couldn't start. Try downloading
the game again.' That, along with a note to go to xbox support.

As a rule, I download system updates whenever they're offered, and I don't see anywhere that I can look at or change what has been downloaded and applied. I did see a compatibility list on a Microsoft site somewhere that seemed to indicate that this would
work, but I'm simply not having any luck. Nothing I'm seeing seems to be showing me a good next step either, short of trying to order a different version and hoping for better luck.

If there's any hints anyone can give me on this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

    :)

    Hey, Szumlas!

Generally, when this error appears, it means that your hard drive isn't official. Do you have any other games that are made for the Xbox that are listed on the

Play original Xbox games on an Xbox 360 console
list? This would help us determine if it's a game issue or hard drive issue.

If you don't have any other Original Xbox games, then what you can do is post back with a picture of the top and bottom of your console's hard drive. We'll be able to help you out with determining if it's an official hard drive that should run the games.

I look forward to helping you out! Backwards Compatibility :)

Oh, thank you! I just got that hard drive a couple months ago, and had trouble finding any in larger sizes from vendors that looked at all reputable. I'm actually pretty certain that is the problem, and I assume that there isn't going to be a workaround
    for it.

I would love to hear about any solutions you might recommend, but I have trouble imagining what those would be. I understand that we're probably past the end-of-life for the 360, and that's just something I need to come to terms with. Backwards Compatibility :)

    I appreciate your help!

  6. We're not quite at end-of-life for the 360, so there are options. One thing that will help us determine if there's a workaround or not is to know the type of console you have. Do you have the console with the 4GB of space on it already without a hard drive?

Yes, I do. Or, at least, my total of free and used space on the primary drive is in that range.

I did make an effort yesterday with the solution described here, but I was not able to get the system to read the disc with the default.xex file. I tried both open and closed CDs, no success either way.

Download Xbox Game Support Updates from Official Microsoft Download Center

So, just in case that was the next step, I haven't been able to make it work yet. The instructions seem pretty clear, so that may be an issue on my end, but I couldn't see where it was.

That would be why we can't get this game to run, then. The 4GB "hard drives" aren't hard drives at all, but flash drives inside. They aren't designed to hold the system data that the regular hard drives hold to activate the Original Xbox back compat games.
The unfortunate side is that the system defaults there, and can't be put onto another drive in the console. This means
this console won't be able to play Morrowind. However, that's not to say you would get one in the future that would be able to play it. I would keep the game just in case. Backwards Compatibility :)

Hopefully that helps out in a way that you have an answer, even if it's not the answer you were entirely looking for. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns about this! I'm happy to help where I can. Backwards Compatibility :)

I appreciate your help with this, and it is good to know for sure what the situation is so that I don't debate going back and fiddling with things again. Backwards Compatibility :) This is probably just a function of there being so many different hardware and software combinations
out there now, but it sure felt like there were answers out there if I wanted to do enough digging.

Thanks, and have a great day!
