Backwards Compatibility from OG xbox to xbox 360

I am trying to play an original xbox game on my 360. I have a hard drive. When I try launching the game I get an error message that reads: The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." I have never gotten a prompt to download the game and it
doesn't give me an option to down load it. What do I do? I've heard there is a backwards compatibility update, but I can't find it. Help please.

Is the hard drive an official MS hard drive or was it purchased new/used from a third party like ebay?

As long as your console has been updated since 2009, it would already have the update required to run backwards compatible games. Just to make sure, the game you're trying to play is on the backwards compatible list right? - List of Xbox games compatible with Xbox 360 - Wikipedia

I understand that the OG xbox versions are backwards compatible on xbox 360 but this is primarily having the 360 versions be backwards compatible on xbox one

Not going to happen.The backwards compatibility program ended in 2021 so no more og xbox/360 games will be made playable on the series x/s.

The couldn't make all games backwards compatible due to technical & licensing issues.

from what I've heard about Backwards Compatibility, it has been put on hold while the Xbox Scarlett is being developed but the plan is to have all games on the Xbox platform backwards compatible on the Scarlett. this may include making all games from the
OG Xbox and 360 on the Xbox One

PES 4 is not listed in the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility list for original Xbox games , PES 5 is though.
