Backwards Compatibility and Old Disks

If one has already owned a game on the Xbox One, will they be able to play it for free on the next generation consoles, or will they have to buy it again?

Also, if one owns a disk for the Xbox One, will the Series X read it and play the game?

A: You'll be able to play it again for free. Bear in mind that Series S has no blu-ray drive so if you go for that console any disc games you own will have to purchased again. But on Series X you can insert them into the drive just like you do on an
Xbox One.

Q: Also, if one owns a disk for the Xbox One, will the Series X read it and play the game?

A: Yes. The Xbox One is backwards compatible with all Xbox One games (with the exception of Kinect titles). You insert the disc and install it on Series X just like you would on a Xbox One.

Series X/S games can only be run either from the Internal storage or the Expansion card (sold separately). They can't be run from older slower external hard drives. You can store them on these drives for later though.

Xbox One and other BC games can be run on either storage device, but will have significantly improved loading times if you install them internally or to the Expansion card.

The disks will say if they are for xbox one or the 360. Check the disk, then the backwards compatibility list.

I know this is a very old post but ROD720 is Wrong about backwards compatibility..... i am a computer hardware engineer btw.... Bluray Disk drives will play DVDs and CDs.... so in a sense if microsoft will introduce the 360 game coding into the xbox one
it is still possible to have backwards compatibility and there is no need for a dual disk drive console or external dvd drive however for what ever reason microsoft has chosen to opt out in allowing backwards compatibility.. even though i understand why they
did it because they want people to buy new games and not play the old ones forever... i feel like they made a HUGE mistake in not allowing 360 games to be played on the xbox One
