upgrading my kids to the xbox one and they really miss the 360 kinect sports games

is Microsoft thinking about making those titles backward compatable

Extremely disappointing

Xbox one should be backwards compatible (even if they have to include a 360 built in) and the kinect should be an additional completely optional perhiphial. I would rather pay the money extra that the kinect represents on backwards compatability.

I don't think it is possible for Xbox One to play Xbox 360 Kinect games due to the way the cameras work.

They will if they are backwards compatible. Unfortunately the 360 Kinect is not backwards compatible so Kinect games are not compatible. You can check which games are compatible at https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backward-compatibility

Unless if Microsoft makes an Xbox 360 adapter for the Xbox One, this may not be possible.

Xbox 360 Kinect games are programmed specifically for the 360 Kinect Sensor, and the Xbox One Kinect Sensor doesn't offer any sort of backward compatibility (afaik). It's likely the reason why there are virtually no 360 Kinect games
on backward compatibility.
