Trouble installing an Xbox 360 game on your Xbox One console

If you are running into issues installing an Xbox 360 game on your Xbox One console, perform a

Power Cycle and try installing the game again.

Game Saves

Save your Xbox 360 games on Xbox One often! If you leave the game (i.e. launch a full screen app or another game) you could potentially lose any unsaved progress.

Creating Parties and Chatting

To interact with other users when playing an Xbox 360 title, use the Party and Chat functions on the Xbox 360 Guide (press
View and Menu buttons to bring up the menu and select Party or Chat).

Multiple controllers

If there is more than one controller connected to your Xbox One, only one controller can be used for navigating the Xbox 360 Guide.

Setting your presence to “Offline” when playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One

If you want others to see you as “Offline” when playing Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One, you must set your presence to “Offline” on both the Xbox 360 Guide as well as in your Xbox One settings.

Xbox Live Terms of Use error

If you’re not able to accept the new Xbox Live terms of use on your Xbox, sign in with the same account at Xbox.com and accept them there.

Home Screen Tile performance

Playing an Xbox 360 game inside the large tile of the Xbox One Home screen can cause sound and picture problems. To avoid this, play games in fullscreen mode.

Avatar changes

It may take a while for edits made in the Xbox Avatars app to appear in Xbox 360 games. You might need to restart the game to see your changes.

3D

There is limited supported for 3D mode in Back Compat.

Are multi-disc Xbox 360 titles playable on Xbox One via Backward Compatibility?

The following Xbox 360 multi-disc titles are playable on Xbox One via Backward Compatibility. These are disc-only titles that are not available for sale digitally.

• DOOM 3 BFG Edition
• RAGE
• Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director’s Cut™
• Mass Effect 2 (also available via EA Access
  Vault)
• Mass Effect 3 (also available via EA Access Vault)

For all multi-disc Xbox 360 games that are backward compatible, inserting 'Disc 1' will allow you to install & play the game. If you are experiencing issues playing after inserting disc 2 or higher of any title, please insert disc 1 and try again.





Known Game Experience Concerns

• Alien Hominid: When adding a second player to the game, the instructions in the game for signing in a second player state that you must press the Xbox guide button. This will take you to the Xbox One Home screen and not to the
  Xbox 360 guide. Workaround: Instead of pressing the Xbox guide button, press both the
  Menu and View buttons to bring up the Xbox 360 guide and then sign in the second player.
• A Kingdom for Keflings: May not use correct avatar when playing offline.
  
• Borderlands:
  • GameDVR and broadcasting are turned off for this game.
  • For all editions, DLC comes included on Xbox One. For the Game of the Year edition, accessing DLC doesn’t require you to insert the DLC disc on Xbox One. Only your purchased DLC, however, will be usable on Xbox 360.
• Call of Duty: Black Ops II: In order to play multiplayer, users must download at least one DLC item. Most common is Nuketown 2025 as it is free. You can download it
  
  here.
• Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: GameDVR and broadcasting are turned off for this game.
  
• Crystal Quest: Crystal Quest is currently not available for Backward Compatibility in Korea.
  
• Defense Grid: Pressing the View button will reset the level if pressed during gameplay. If you are trying to call up the Xbox 360 guide it is recommended that you first press and hold the Menu button then press View to
  avoid resetting the level.
• Fable II (Russian disc version only):
  Once you install the disc, you will see a new installation of this game if you had it installed previously. You will need to delete the old version to play the Russian version. This does not affect the Games on Demand version in Russia.
  • In My games & apps, locate the Fable II games installed on your console.
  • Hold down the LB + RB + View buttons to bring up the game details.
  • If the game shows GAM0 in the package name instead of GAMRU, delete that version. You want to keep the GAMRU version. See the image below for what you should look for.

• Fallout 3: You will only be able to play disc based DLC for Fallout 3 if you also own the digital version of the game. Disc based DLC includes the Broken Steel and Point Lookout disc and the Operation Anchorage and The Pitt disc.
  This restriction does not apply to the Game of the Year Edition.
• Fallout: New Vegas: In order for you to access the DLC included with the Game of the Year disc edition, you will need to use disc 2. Disc 2 will includes the full game as well as the included DLC. Disc 1 only includes the base
  game.
• Frogger: GameDVR and broadcasting are turned off for this game.
• Halo: Reach: On first launch, the title will take about 60 seconds to load. You may see a black screen for much of this time. Please be patient as the title loads.
• Hexic HD: Games that came pre-installed on Xbox 360 will not recognize you as owning the game. You may be able to acquire this game for free on the
  
  Hexic HD product page, or by searching for it on an Xbox One or Xbox 360 console.
  
• Kameo:
  • If you receive the error “There's a problem with the disc you are using,” it is the game’s generic error. It is likely not an issue with the disc.
  • The Spanish version is only available in Spain dialect. There is no Latin America/Mexico Spanish version.
• Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2: Xbox 360 consoles cannot connect to system link matches hosted by Xbox One consoles.
  
• Mass Effect 3: You will need to follow the below steps to be able to access Multiplayer in-game.
  • Launch Mass Effect 3 on an Xbox One console with an account that owns the title
  • In the Main Menu select “Multiplayer”
  • It will pop up an “Online Pass Activation” message
  • Select “Purchase Online Pass Code” (don’t worry, it’s free)
  • On the Xbox 360 Guide pop up, select “Confirm Purchase”
  • You will get an Xbox One notification banner that says “Xbox One Download, to install this, find the game in your games & apps, then select Manage game. You’ll see it listed under Ready to Install.”
  • Go to My games & apps > Games > Mass Effect 3 > Manage game
  • Under Ready to Install, select and install “Mass Effect 3 Online Pass”
  • After that finishes installing, restart Mass Effect 3 and select “Multiplayer” from the Main Menu
  • You should now be able to play Multiplayer modes online.
• Perfect Dark Zero:
  • When creating a Custom Game for online play, you cannot change the “Private Game” option. If the game has been set to co-operative match, the second player will not be able to join the game using “Find Game”.
    Workaround: The player setting up the match needs to invite the second player to the game. (Pre-existing issue from Xbox 360)
    
  • During co-operative play in Mission 0, there is an area where players are expected to crouch under a laser. Instead of allowing the player to pass underneath, the laser collides with the player. (Pre-existing issue from Xbox 360)
• Saints Row IV:
  • National Treasure Edition:
    • This is a special edition 2-disc set that includes the main game and DLC. To play the game with all DLC you will need to use Disc 1. Disc 2 will only allow you to play the main game and will not access DLC.
    • Currently the Thank You Pack, Child's Play Pack, and Grass Roots 'Merica Pack DLCs are not supported.
  • Japan version is currently not supported.
• Super Street Fighter IV: To purchase Super Street Fighter IV digitally, users will need to purchase Super
  Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition from the store. After which, users can purchase the Ultra Street Fighter IV DLC and access
  all Ultra Street Fighter IV content. Users who played and unlocked content in the original release of Street Fighter IV may need to sync their cloud save in order to access content in Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. To see unlocked colors for your
  characters, please perform the following Workaround:
  
  • Install the original Street Fighter IV on your Xbox One console. This should automatically sync game saves once launched.
  • After syncing, return to Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition to access your unlocked character colors.
  • If you are unable to install Street Fighter IV (due to missing or damaged disc), you can sync the game save with this Workaround:
    • On your Xbox One console, launch Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition
    • Open the guide by pressing your controller's View and Menu buttons at the same time.
    • Select Manage Storage > Saved Games § Select Street Fighter IV and press X to sync
    • Return to Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition and relaunch game to see transferred content
  • For users who owned transferable DLC, you can now access alternate costumes in Super Street Fighter IV. In order to access this content, you will need to install the DLC on your Xbox One console after you have installed Super Street Fighter IV. After launching
    the Super Street Fighter IV, this content will be accessible in-game in the player selection screens.
• Super Meat Boy: There is a pre-existing bug from Xbox 360 where controller input doesn’t behave correctly with controller 2.
• Skate 3:
  • Japanese language support is currently not supported.
  • If you are currently experiencing issues with contents from the After Dark Pack, please uninstall the DLC from the 'Manage game' screen and install the
    
    Skate Share Pack.
• Toy Soldiers Cold War:
  • Existing frame rate degradation in Xbox 360 version may manifest slightly differently in Backward Compatibility version.
  • The first time you launch the game and have no game saves, you may encounter an error screen that states an update to the title is needed. Once you have saved a game you should not encounter the error again.
  • You cannot join/create multiplayer games with Xbox 360 users that do not own the free Multiplayer Pack DLC.
    Workaround: Download the free Multiplayer Pack from the website or by searching for the content on an Xbox One or Xbox
    360 console.
• Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise: When moving Xbox 360 saves to the cloud, you must move both the garden files and the settings file. Deleting or failing to move the settings file prevents the game from recognizing the garden saves.
• Zuma: There is a pre-existing bug from Xbox 360 where achievements that should be earned, are not always earned. To make achievements work for a specific user (“User X”) you can perform the following workaround. This will require
  2 user accounts (“User X” and “User Y”):
  • Sign in “User X” and “User Y” into Xbox One
  • Choose “User Y” and start Zuma
  • Proceed past the “Press A” to the main menu.
  • Ensure that you have seen “User Y signed into Xbox LIVE” notification.
  • Bring up the Xbox 360 Guide by pressing Menu and View buttons at the same time.
  • Sign out “User Y”
  • Sign in “User X”
• The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion:
  
  • Disc 1 of the Game of the Year Edition of Elder Scrolls Oblivion provides just the base game. To install and play both the base game & all the DLC included, please install & play from Disc 2.
  • The Disc version of the DLC 'Elder Scrolls Oblivion: The Shivering Isles' will grant you only the DLC. Owning the Games on Demand version of Oblivion and having the DLC disc in the Xbox One console is required to play 'The Shivering Isles' DLC.
• Injustice: Gods Among Us: The DLC 'Ame Comi Skins' is not supported for the backward compatibility version. However, the DLC is supported with Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition
  Disc Version.

In-game issues (for all games)

• The ESRB splash screen or disclaimer text does not show at the beginning of games.
  
• After the Xbox 360 startup animation, games sometimes take a few seconds to get going.
  
• For games that use System Link, matches that span across console types (Xbox 360 and Xbox One) or game types (digital and disc) might experience varying degrees of responsiveness.
