Backward compatibility download size and number of times required to download it

The Xbox One can't read and run the data directly from BC 360 game discs. The games don't run from the discs like they would on a 360 console.

When Microsoft made these games BC, it took the original games, and without getting into all the technical details, reverse engineered and repackaged them as a digital downloads so that the Xbox One can play them. This is why as Smwutches as already stated,
there is an 'Update' when you insert a BC disc 360 game into your console. This isn't an update, it's actually the digital version of the game.

This is why your 360 game 'updates' are around the 8-16 GB sizes. Still comparatively small compared to the average Xbox One digital game download.

The BC system for 360 games on the Series X will have to work the same as there is no other way to do it.

However, the Series X is architecturally similar to the Xbox One, so Xbox One games will install and play on Series X just as they do an on an Xbox One console.

What you're download is not just a backwards compatibility update. It's the data for the game itself and other game updates. So any game you play will have something to install when you first insert the games.

There's no word on specifics to how the Series X will work so we won't know if it'll work the same there or not.

As some additional information. to the answer already specified.

The backward compatible game while it is the same game the download is basically different version of the game, being the backward compatible version of the game. This is also the reason why inserting a backward compatible game via disc will result in the
backward compatible version being downloaded (disk is still required to start the game)

So in order for you to download that backward compatible version you will have to login to the Xbox Live Account that is used on the 360, which allows you to download backward compatible games that you own.

because backwards compatibility on current consoles requires you to download the version of the game that has been altered to be compatible.

To use the backwards compatibility program you must be connected to the Live service. Once the disc is inserted, the console will download the update required to make the title compatible.
