Background download with external HDD

Hi, I would like to download to my external hard disk with the xbox turned off. The problem is that if I turn off the xbox, the external hdd is also turned off becasue it must be powered by xbox.

How could i do?

Where to begin? I want to say I have 750gb western digital hdd with a usb powered enclosure kit(right now I have 514 digital games between my 250 gb slim hdd and the external).

I recently had on background downloads and tried to download XCOM Enemy Unknown. I experienced so many issues over the past week, I am going to do a list of the experiences.

1)Every huge digital game download would get to a percentage(usually 12%), go to 0% then 80% and finally 100% before saying whatever game could not download.

2)A lot of hard freezing of the system, more than normal.

3) After every huge digital game would not download it would cause all my games on my external harddrive to have a yellow exclamation mark besides them until I removed and reinserted the external hdd back in.

Until earlier today I thought it was a hard drive related so I have done this list all week trying to fix the hard drive, because despite not being able to download to it I can play my digital games on it without a problem.

1)Clearing the cache 3 times back to back before restarting the console on both hard drives.

2)Googling like crazy and reading various tips.

3)Turning off the background downloads option.

4)Deleting the marketplace data.

5)Trying various ports on the xbox 360 to power on the external hdd.

6)Trying different games to download.

7)Try to copy over games to the external hdd to see if it could write and not just read.

8)Just let the external hdd rest.

9)Open up enclosure kit to make sure everything is properly connected and not dirty.

10)Talk with customer support to trouble shoot.

I really wish someone with knowledge will explain to me what is going on. It can't be that the external hdd is no good because I can play from it for hours with 0 problems and that I did manage to copy over a 78mb game without any problems. Any help will
be appreciated.
