Available Gamertag Given a Tag

First, I want to start by saying it's not just a spacing issue, looked through a lot of discussions and ambassadors saying it was to do with the fact that names like "" and "Lone HEX" are considered the same but it is definitely not the only cause
of the issue.

It appears to be related to whoever is trying to create the account

eg.

I try to change gamertag to "Da Akali" on my main account and it will allow the change without giving me a tag

I create a new account and give it the same name, but this time it is given it a tag

So, thinking this was an effort to reduce bots taking original names I got one of my friends who has 10k+ gamerscore to try change to it and it said the account name was taken for them as well (I tried at the same time and it still said it was
availible)

I am aware of another possible cause whereby if a user changes there gamertag or simply removes their account the gamertag isn't made availible for a short period, but it doesn't seem like that would only effect certain people (refer to above note)

Can someone plzzz explain why this happens because I have looked into this before and there doesn't seem to be any new fixes or documentation on why this happens : /

as you checked to see if the name is available on the main account it then locks that name for a certain amount of time, after this time passes you can then use it on another account, give it 12 to 24 hours to unlock then try on the new account.

I'm having a similar issue.

I have 2 accounts, one is my main account and the other was for when friends without an account wanted to play. I paid for both, but over time the alt account fell into not being used.

When the new name system was implemented, I tried to switch my main account name to one I use now. It had numbers added to the end, which I found strange as there isn't another person with my name. Out of curiousity I then checked on my alt account
and it didn't have numbers attached! Nobody has been able to give my an answer as to why or how to get the numbers taken off my main account.

The tag number were implemented as a measure to avoid having problems with taken gamertags, you can use that gamertag as other people but the system will ad a number tag to avoid repetition.

The free gamertag change is only available if you were given a randomly generated tag when you signed up and are changing that tag. Since you have a tag you chose, you will have to pay to change your tag.
