Audio Switching HDMI/Soundbar to XBox One X Controller Audio

    Hi All,

I have the XBox One X with the updated controller that has native 2.5 mm audio (look up the newer Xbox one controller and you will see that it has an audio jack built in).

My setup is XBox One X to TV via HDMI cable, and TV to sound bar via optical cable. This setup completely works and I have great sound.

If I unplug the optical cable connecting the TV to the soundbar, I am then able to plug headphones into my Xbox One X controller and I'm able to hear sound perfectly through the controller.

My problem occurs when I have the optical cable plugged in and I plug in my headphones into the Xbox One X controller. I cannot force it to switch audio over to controller-only while the optical cable is still plugged into my soundbar. Xbox basically forces
me to play it via HDMI to TV to sound bar via audio cable, and will not switch it to my headphones. I can unplug the soundbar or use a remote to turn off power to the soundbar, but it is annoying that i cannot switch between audio destinations (i.e. headset
only, audio-out only, or both), but am stuck with both.

I understand that there is a viable work around (turn off the soundbar - or if people dont have a soundbar, mute the TV - but why can't this be like multiple displays where you have the option to duplicate display, extend display, or show only on one display?
Perhaps I'm missing the option where I can switch it? I have checked all of the audio settings that I could find.

    :)

Audio Switching HDMI/Soundbar to XBox One X Controller Audio

    Hello JM!

I've never seen that option on any xbox console including the latest ones. I have to mute my tv as well. The only thing I could find if you want to try it out is the bitstream.

Bitstream format – Once you’ve set HDMI audio or Optical audio to Bitstream out, you can select one of these
formats. These formats are typically used with compatible audio receivers or optical headphones. Formats labeled “HDMI only” will turn off Optical audio.

I have no way of testing that myself but since you are using the optical audio it might work. Let us know your results.

    Thanks!

I want to control volume on my XBox One remote control. My Soundbar (Bose) is connected by HDMI to my TV Sharp. What setting do I need to choose?

Thank you for contact us! I'm Anderson, an Independent Consultant and a Microsoft user like you.

    Good afternoon

First, make sure your Xbox One is connected to your TV via HDMI.

Next, connect your Bose Soundbar to your TV using an HDMI cable.

On your Sharp TV, go to the audio settings menu and select "HDMI Audio Output."

Select the HDMI port to which your Bose Soundbar is connected.

Once the HDMI connection is established, the audio from your Xbox One should be routed through your TV and into your Soundbar.

Now, you should be able to control the volume of your Bose Soundbar using your Xbox One remote.

Will XBox Series X support external DAC/Amp hardware via USB?

I wonder if an hdmi audio extractor will allow you to pull optical audio out of the hdmi signal to a soundbar or dac? Could be a cheap solution.
Yes, that will absolutely work. Something like an audio-extractor, an HDMI switch with separate audio outputs, or digital audio out of a TV or receiver are all potential workarounds to the lack of optical out on the new console. However, it would be nice
if the XBox would support these options natively since not everyone may have a TV with optical out or a receiver, and the only recourse is to buy additional hardware.

Xbox One X setup with Soundbar

Thanks. For some reason now, when I go xbox to Soundbar, Soundbar to TV (arc) I'm not getting a picture - says no signal.

Which is weird because I've had the Nintendo Switch plugged into Soundbar and then SB to TV (arc) and that works. Is the xbox hdmi cable not compatible ie do I need to upgrade it.

Also another weird thing is I don't seem to be able to get into the xbox audio settings. I can change the chat etc but not the audio.

Dolby digital on XBOX Series X

    Hello,

I am having a very similar issue with an LG 4K TV and a Vizio soundbar that supports 5.1 Dolby digital and DTS. I connect my Xbox series x to the TV and use the ARC HDMI cable to connect to my soundbar. When I try to switch the audio output on my Xbox the only option is stereo uncompressed. I'm very confused. The audio config check on Xbox on my TV says it only supports stereo when I know for a fact my tv supports pass through surround.
