Audio setup help. Cannot get 7.2 uncompressed or 5.1 ucompressed when using ARC setup.

    Good afternoon,

Since getting my new LG OLED TV and Xbox One X I've been trying to optimize the visuals and audio. I have a 7.1 system running through a Sony STR DN1040 receiver. It supports 4K pass through but not the newest 2.21 or whatever the newest decoding requires,
so I've wired the HDMI to the TV and get the automatic start of HDR on the TV with HDR supported games and Apps. However, I lose the ability to select a 7.1 uncompressed audio as an option on the Xbox. I can select bitstream and then select Dolby or DTS. Is
this sufficient to get the best from my audio system? Should I consider a high speed switch and skip the ARC setup? Run the Xbox HDMI out to the receiver and the TV simultaneously? I could run an optical line as well, but it would require more juggling of
inputs and I've heard the audio through HDMI is preferred. I also read that bitstream is inferior to the uncompressed selection. Can someone help guide me to the best way to do this?

A second issue I have is that I have also added a Plantronics Rig 800 with Dolby Atmos to the mix. When I have the USB plugged in, the Xbox automatically selects Headphones optimization even if I have not turned on the headphones. Its a small annoyance having
to unplug and plug in the USB device every time as everything is hidden away in a cabinet. Any other solutions?

The TV supports Dolby Atmos, unfortunately my receiver does not and I'm not quite ready to replace a perfectly good audio receiver. don't have the speaker setup to take advantage of Atmos anyways. Would it help with the decoding issue in ARC setup? I have
read that ARC downgrades all the audio signals to Stereo. Anyone know if this is true?

Thanks for all your help. I'm far from an expert in this area.

    :)

optimal sound settings for Xbox One (uncompressed or bitstream?)

If you're using a 5.1 setup with HDMI then uncompressed is the way to go. Bitstream only supports Dolby Digital and DTS, uncompressed allows you to access Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master for Blu-Rays.

    Dolby Atmos Decoding

Check the links above. I did and they provide the info needed to setup.

    I use ARC 5.1 uncompressed

All I really know is my setup sounds better when it's 5.1 uncompressed.

    Surround Sound not completely working

An optical cable simply can't pass 5.1/7.1 uncompressed, only HDMI or multichannel analog can (the latter of which the Xbox doesn't have). As such your headset (presumably optical) does NOT and cannot support 5.1/7.1 uncompressed. Instead it supports 5.1
Dolby Digital (DD=compressed), and virtually creates 7.1 from the 5.1 through processing (optical can't pass 7.1 DD+ either, only 5.1). Currently, the Xbox One cannot output Dolby Digital 5.1 over optical, which is why you do not get surround sound in your
headset. It is also not surprising that your TV is not handling 5.1/7.1 uncompressed properly, as that is something you really need an audio receiver to handle. What is probably happening is your TV is downmixing the uncompressed 5.1/7.1 to some sort of stereo
(2.1?), resulting is loss of some audio channels. The rest you hear as"virtual surround sound" created by your LG system.

The solution for you is to get a proper audio/video receiver (recommend Onkyo or Denon) that has HDMI inputs, can handle uncompressed 5.1/7.1, etc.; OR wait until the One can output DD 5.1 over optical, When the latter happens, keep in mind that most TVs
will NOT pass DD 5.1 out over optical. Perhaps yours does (some Vizio models do). If yours doesn't, you will never get true DD 5.1 (just because you hear sound from all speakers doesn't mean you are getting true DD 5.1) from your current setup and would need
to run the optical out directly to your LG system, instead of through the TV. Hope that helps.

    Connection Sound Bar Using HDMI

For reference, HDMI ARC is meant for a TV to send the sound it receives from something like its digital TV tuner "upstream" to your soundbar.

The way you have it set up physically is correct, just that its not depending on ARC (Xbox One audio gets stripped from the HDMI cable by your soundbar and sends the video onto your TV).

Try changing the audio setting on the Xbox One to Stereo Uncompressed, make sure the soundbar isn't muted, etc. Maybe your Soundbar doesn't support 5.1 uncompressed, but 5.1 compressed Dolby Digital or DTS.

Cracking sounds when HDMI is set to Bitstream OUT

In that setup, why would you set it to bitstream? Better to output 5.1/7.1 uncompressed....
