Attempting to connect to xbox live through the computer causes Internet to go out

Hello! I am posting this on my boyfriend's behalf.

He is currently attending college so I will not be able to supply router information. However, I feel the router isn't the problem in this situation but rather his xbox and/or computer.

Everything else connects to the internet just fine, his phone and (only until recently) his computer. The xbox use to connect, but only through his computer.

The problem is, when he does the, "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" not only has this stopped connecting the xbox, but it disables his computer's wifi as well.

He does have an ethernet port and cord in his dorm, however, the port is broken so using it is not an option at the moment.

We know this can be resolved because it use to work. I just hope you guys can help!

    :)

A little more information: he would use his ethernet cord to connect his computer to the xbox. When he does that now, the xbox does not connect and the computer disconnects. We have unplugged the xbox, plugged it back in. Checked the connection, when the
computer is connected to the xbox it says, "Can't connect to your DHCP server" and when it isn't and we attempt to connect via the college router it says, "can't get an IP address"

    Hi Giggles,

Could you tell us how your boyfriend has setup his computer, as a hub (not literally) for which devices on his network can connect through and to the Internet. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), or as a network bridge (bridge mode).

Is it that each device (computer, smartphone, tablet. console) that your boyfriend need to connect to the college network has to first authenticate/authorized itself before it can reach to the Internet? For example, before he can even reach the Internet
on any given device, he first need to authenticate himself with a username and password.

He's very frustrated with the situation. We have tried countless amounts of solutions that we have found online. He's giving me a very limited amount of information to give you because he gets annoyed everytime I mention it. Which is understandable, he's
in college and always has tons of homework.

But basically he sets up his computer to supply the internet connection, I don't know the step by step process of this. He just tells me that he goes into something and turns on the ICS as you mentioned. He only does this for the xbox, his computer and any
other device can pick up the connection on its own.

The college supplies two networks. One needs authorization and the other one doesnt. Both do the same thing according to.him.

It would be better if try and communicate with your boyfriend and tell him to either configure his computer as a network bridge (bridge) and not ICS. Or, if he needs a work-around for his console's wireless connection, he could easily spoof the MAC address
of his computer (being the 802.1x supplicant) and assign his computer's MAC address to his console, as its alternate MAC address. The MAC address of his computer should be the one network card that he uses to connect to his college network.

ICS is a great way for a host to share the connection to other devices on the same network, but not for gaming consoles, as it add an additional layer of NAT, and a poor implementation as well.
