  1. Attaching an External Media Drive

I am looking to connect a USB 3.0 drive that I use to store media files on; music. pics, and some videos. I am not looking to format it to use as addition game storage, but rather keep it NTFS formatted and use the Media Player app to play the files on it.

My only question is whether or not it is possible to add additional files to the drive once it is connected to the Xbox One? Will I need to disconnect it and plug it into a computer to add more files later or is there another way to add them like through
    the network?

    Thanks for the answers!

    :)

    Play videos on burned discs

I've put a disk in and none of the apps even see the optical blu ray drive let alone any media files on it. The blu ray player app does play media on a blu ray disk that is in the proper blu ray format, but VLC, or even the file explorer app do not even display the optical drive. I can play media on an external drive using VLC.

Which external hard drive to use with Xbox 360 ?

This is very interesting news..didn't know that the 360 could use large external drives.

I knew about attaching flash drives for added storage, but not actual HDDs.

It'll be very handy for extra space..need to look into this, get a new drive I reckon.

    Hi Your Chagrin,

You'll need to manually add media to your drive. There isn't a way to copy files to it via the Xbox.

Media Player isn't recognizing *anything* anymore...

My Xbox detects and lists that there is an external hard drive attached but when I open it in media player I get the "No files found message". The external works perfect on my PC so I know it is not at fault!

    Not enough space error

Internal drive is formatted to be optimized for Games and Apps. When you attach an external drive, you're prompted with options of selecting whether to use the new drive for Games or for Media. If you select games, it will work same as internal drive and
will be optimized for games. For music and movies, you've to have an external drive formatted for media.

The reason, I suspect, is this that Xbox One is primarily a gaming console and thus it needs it's internal drive optimized for loading games faster. With 1TB console, you can install a lot of games on the drive, and that's the reason many select it, just
to have lot of games installed, and storing media on it not being the primary reason.

Can I watch movies from my external hard drive?

It will not be the same as 360 as you can put games on external drives once they have released the update for external drives to be attached.

Most games will be a minimum of 40gb so they will not create a limit of 16gb drives to attach.

I will also add that I had my external drive attached to my 360 and it was definitely more than 16gb too.

    Onedrive for Xbox One S

That's because the OneDrive App for the console doesn't allow offline storage.

If you wish to have videos and pictures available offline, you should copy them on an external USB drive on your PC, and then attach that drive to your console.

Then you can use the Media Player app on the console to watch videos and pictures from that drive.
