We understand that you were trying to update the ARK: Survival Evolved and is unable to because of the error message from the Microsoft Store. Let us check on this together and sort this out in timely manner.

As per your description, you already have installed the game from Microsoft Store. May we know if you can try to check the said game in Xbox app and check for update too? It could be the system file or packages that is not necessarily to be downloaded into the PC is being detected by Microsoft Store which the store constantly redownload the non-mandatory system file/package. Also, you may check for any anti-virus, VPN, PC Optimizer that's running in your PC that could possibly hinder any threats to be downloaded. (The update sometimes read as threat as this access the secured folders of the PC.)

By the way, may we ask if this issue happens to all game titles you were downloading from Microsoft Store?

Sorry for the late reply. In most cases, the downloaded data should be save on similar folder with the game you have installed. However, you might be unable to recover those files if the folder or the game has been reinstalled. To take your chances since you have mentioned you selected different drive, you may contact the game support for assistance - Contact — Studio Wildcard.

By the way, is the installation issue happening to other game titles?
