So the only difference is the ability to upgrade hardware? Then there is no difference at all.

Even the 360 had a hardware upgrade in the HD-DVD add-on. Sony's machines for two generations have allowed upgradable hard drives.

The only real difference between a console and a PC is the software.

Wow Wild really seems to have it in for the new consoles haha. Funny thing is these new consoles are now getting more and more PC games since they are now x86 based. But I do agree on the price of games argument as we console gamers do seem to get ripped
off.

As for the Steam machines (box), they look great and having more choice is never a bad thing!! But until they become mainstream and a proven viable option, who apart from gamers in the know that are already interested in them are going to take them seriously?
Valve themselves have already said they're not going to make any exclusive games for them. A lot of PC gamers I know who want to game in their lounge already just hook their PC up to their TV. Its not hard haha. Steambox is the evolution of the gaming PC,
not of gaming as a whole.

Consoles will continue to exist until the need for a dedicated box is no longer required.

I game on consoles not because I think they are the best thing out and are somehow magical hardware that transcends its own specs (like some people seem to think of some systems), but because of its ease of use, no need to upgrade for an entire generation,
games designed to make the most of the hardware on offer, exclusive content I can't get anywhere else and it all being tied together by a service that is consistent across all games (Live).

Sure I could get slightly better versions of multiplatform games on other systems but I love Halo, Gears and Forza. If Steam had those then it might be a different story

I'm honestly not sure how much simpler I can make this.....

They are the same thing. Steam Box is a computer, Steam is the OS (currently software but will be the OS). If you are using Steam then you have a Steam Box.

Every PC game on Steam that isn't on a console is exclusive to the Steam Box.

So if were now talking exclusives in general rather than Valve developed exclusives the Steam Box has 100's if not 1000's.

The IGN article is almost a year old and is inaccurate.

DOTA 2 has SteamPlay which means it's playable with the Steam OS which means it is exclusive. They may not be actively developing something exclusively for it but there will be Valve developed exclusives on the service.

Goes both ways though. Consoles have hundreds of exclusives not on PC...

Anyway choice is good and if Steambox interests you then awesome since you'll be well catered for. I can definitely see why they would interest some people!

Personally I have had no good reason to build a gaming PC and Steambox doesn't change that fact. Different strokes for different folks etc.

I just think its stupid to say that Xbox/PS4 fans not having an interest in them is ignoring evolution haha.

A console is plug and device,not upgradable.

Face it the line between consoles and PC is blurred so much at the moment anyway.

You can write play games on the Xbox One and listen to your music from Amazon at the same time. You can use the online version of Microsoft Office to do office work on either the 360 or Xbox One.

Consoles are a hop, skip, and a jump away from being a optical driveless 'PC' that the difference shouldn't really matter.

Face it for most people what they actually do on a PC isn't that far away from what they could do on a console. If my Xbox 360 could move music to my Android phone I think I could happily do away with my laptop.

The biggest difference I think would be in user made content, PC gamers do like mods (something which doesn't have such negative connotations on the PC).

I just don't think there is much to worry about, the Steam Box may provide a stiff competition which may be a win for current console owners, and there will still be people, like me, that don't want to deal with upgrades to keep up with new games, or part
replacements.

And then factor in that Live is a excellent online service for filtering out a lot of cheaters(so I hear).

I think in the end, if Steam Box becomes a gaming console platform, gamers will win.

Edit: for the first part, I also wanted to say that people will also know what to expect with a X1 or PS4, instead of needing to upgrade in order to achieve the level of graphics studios are advertising.
