Are updates mandatory for Xbox One X?

While updates aren't mandatory if you plan to stay offline, I would highly recommend you update your XBox regularly as they provide updates features and stability updates

I would say this varies from developer to developer and how they want their games to function online and offline. For a majority of games updates are pushed and are mandatory. The game will notify you of an update and sometimes you get the option to dismiss
it and continue playing offline. However, for games that thrive on online PVP, updates are almost always mandatory.

These updates are pushed to keep players on the same level playing field. Whether that is bug fixes, network consistency improvement, general maintenance to keep server pings low and lag spikes low, updates to game play, etc.

Other console companies are the same way as well.

Thank you for the info. I was let to believe that the X model handles games differently from the older models due to its ability to use the 4k updates of games.

I agree. But as other people stated you can skip them if your console is offline and you are playing only single player games.

I think if your this concerned about requiring an internet connection the Xbox One X may not be the console for you.

People are right that most (not all) games will work with no internet connection, however so many games these days require a "day 1" patch that fix so many things you may as well say that these patches are mandatory.

Also there are so many games that have patches so they make full use of the Xbox One X (Fallout 4 for example) that again, you may as well call them mandatory for the Xbox One X.

As for buying "the other one" it will be a similar situation on the PS4 Pro, both consoles have games that require patches to make full use of the respective hardware or "day 1" patches that although aren't "mandatory" fix so many
bugs that they may as well be called mandatory.

At the end of the day, if you don't have an permanent internet connection, buying either an Xbox One or a PS4 (be them X or Pro) wont be the best option for you, perhaps you may want to look at the Nintendo Switch. What patches they do need are usually
much smaller and Nintendo games usually arrive in a much better state with very few of them requiring a "day 1" patch.

I have Switch, as well as 360 and PS3. I know about day one patches that they fix many things. I was simply asking if they are a MUST for the game to even run nothing more nothing less. I do not get why people are so easily confused by my question. Buy
disc game > insert disc into console > install the game > run something to play (with the exception of online games that require all users to have the same version).

It was not much of a concern that a matter of principle. I want when I buy a game more of less to own it. Like in the old days. Not to buy half-game on a disc.

I know fallout 4 is greatly improved when updated and the 4k enhancements are amazing. The question was not that. It is not because I do not have the internet.

Yes, Xbox One, one S, and one X work the same way. A good example is Fortnite which is developed by Epic Games. They push out an update and they decide if its mandatory or not. Fortnite being an online based games it is required. However for an RPG based
game the developers may say, the update is only necessary if you wish to stay online and use Xbox live features. You can however dismiss the updates and play offline.

like already said the mandatory update to begin with then you can play offline, but id advise to do all updates when possible as this will help maintain the xbox, add new features and keep security up to date

There is an initial update that is mandatory. After that update, you can go offline.

Is that the Console update or game update? If it is the console update it is ok. But is there mandatory update for EVERY game purchased physically?

You can play it, but it won't have 4k support without the update.

All I want to be able to use Xbox One X like a normal console. If I buy a new physical game and I do not have internet for the moment I want to be able to play it like on a normal Xbox One console.

I would like the choice of playing without those extra patches for enhanced graphics.

I understand Nikolay. but this only applies to digital copies of games. Game discs already have incorporated 4k support. Digital copies don't, to reduce download size.

That's correct. Games that support 4k will have the additional files on disc.

How can they have the additional files on the disc if they were released before the Xbox One X?

Older ones won't be requesting the 4k update if you're offline.
