Are updates mandatory for Xbox One X?

Hello everyone,

I asked here and there and I get different opinions so I would love to get the real answer.

I want to buy Xbox One X but I want to be sure of one thing before I buy because it is expensive for me and I want it to be right.

Let me picture you the following scenario:

1. I go and Buy Xbox One X console.

2. I buy Xbox one game like Fallout 4, Assassins Creed Origins etc. (no games that require always online connection)

3. Lets say I do not have internet connection at the moment.

Can I just install the game from the disc on the Xbox One X and play it right away without any updates, enhancement patches etc. ?

I know that updates and patches fixes many bugs and stuff but I want to know if internet connection is MANDATORY for me to just insert the games disc > install the game > play the game.

It is this simple. This is the only thing that stops me from buying the console instead of the other one.

Help with TDU2 Missing Title Update

I cant get onto Test Drive Unlimited 2 online because im apparently missing a 'Title update'. It keeps directing me to the xbox dashboard and not the updates im required to download. when I search Test Drive Unlimited 2 in the games, it says theres
only 3 mandatory updates. These are: Mandatory update 1, mandatory update 3 & Mandatory update 4. It appears im missing title update 2 but i might be wrong. Any help/suggestions?

 

Mandatory Update a real thing?

I've heard that if you disconnect the Xbox one from the internet and new updates become available, you'll have to do a mandatory update if you don't want to update it with the new available updates after some time (assuming that time is a few weeks) even if you don't connect it back to the internet and won't be able to really do anything with the console until you reconnect to the internet and do the mandatory update. I need to know because I'm planning on buying the One and game offline for a temporary time until my internet is back up. Setting up the Xbox won't be a problem which I'll be doing somewhere else with an internet connection as some of you already know from my other thread. Just need to know if the mandatory update is true or not because if it is, I'll just wait until my internet is back up then buy the One without having to struggle with the mandatory update.

 

There is an initial update that is mandatory. After that update, you can go offline.

 

Is that the Console update or game update? If it is the console update it is ok. But is there mandatory update for EVERY game purchased physically?

 

It's a console update. There are updates for the games themselves, but you would only need them if you're connected to Live.

The Xbox One X Game updates for the 4K HDR content are mandatory. A lot of the game that have been release previously before the Xbox One X release will require an update.

 

Again 2 different points. One says that the updates are mandatory the other one says they are optional. Come on

 

So even if I have the physical disk I can't just install and play the game offline?

I have found this info in the support page:"If you don’t download ahead of time, your 4K content will arrive in the form of an update the first time you launch an applicable game on Xbox One X. This will be a required update—skipping it will not let you play
the non-4K version offline. "

I am just asking about the Xbox One X

Lets say I buy Fallout 4 and install it on Xbox One X without internet

Can I still play it ?

You can play it, but it won't have 4k support without the update.

Really? This is what I want. But the support page states that I will not be able to play the non-4K version.

All I want to be able to use Xbox One X like a normal console. If I buy a new physical game and I do not have internet for the moment I want to be able to play it like on a normal Xbox One console.

I would like the choice of playing without those extra patches for enhanced graphics.

I understand Nikolay. but this only applies to digital copies of games. Game discs already have incorporated 4k support. Digital copies don't, to reduce download size.

That's correct. Games that support 4k will have the additional files on disc.

What about older Xbox One games before the Xbox One X? Like Assassins Creed Unity or some other games before the X?

How can they have the additional files on the disc if they were released before the Xbox One X?

Older ones won't be requesting the 4k update if you're offline.

 

Hi,

Let me clear this up. When you set the console up for the first time, there is a mandatory update. This is a system update, it does not update any games. Once this has been completed and you are signed in, you can go offline, and if you so wish, you need
not connect again if you don't want to.

You may install pretty much any single player only game (like Fallout 4) from disc and it will play, but depending on it's age, it may not have 4K support.

For Fallout 4, you can apply the 4K update if you go online - it's free. Once you have the update you can go offline again, but this is up to you, it is not mandatory.

Fallout 4 came out before the One X, so to get 4K you need the update, otherwise it will play in 1080P.

Most games released in the past six months will already have 4K support straight off the disc. The only time this would not apply is if the game contained extra 4K textures that could not fit on the disc. 4K support does not always mean a bigger game install
size.

like already said the mandatory update to begin with then you can play offline, but id advise to do all updates when possible as this will help maintain the xbox, add new features and keep security up to date

 

How about the new games like Assassins Creed Origins. Could I just install it offline and play it without any enhancements (if they are NOT included).

I was left with the impression from the other guys that if I do not install the enhancement updates I will NOT be able to play the games AT ALL even in 1080p.

I would say this varies from developer to developer and how they want their games to function online and offline. For a majority of games updates are pushed and are mandatory. The game will notify you of an update and sometimes you get the option to dismiss
it and continue playing offline. However, for games that thrive on online PVP, updates are almost always mandatory.

These updates are pushed to keep players on the same level playing field. Whether that is bug fixes, network consistency improvement, general maintenance to keep server pings low and lag spikes low, updates to game play, etc.

Other console companies are the same way as well.
