Are the Xbox Series X's only two deficits (lack of VR and SSD speed) easily fixable?...

Given that Sony demonstrated that the CUs can be clocked at 2.2ghz without issue, what is stopping Microsoft from overclocking their gpu to 2ghz or more at times instead of keeping them locked at 1.8ghz? They could advertise a 15TF console if they allow for overclocking.

The Series X has a very fast SSD, but it's about half as fast as the PS5's SSD and the Gen4 SSDs that are on the market today. This will lead to longer load times compared to the PS5 as the one area where the Series X underperforms the PS5. Sony will be aiming for near instantanous loading, instantanous fast travel and instantanous game switching, and the Series X would not be able to achieve that. If Microsoft opts to include a Gen4 SSD in the Series X leaving the rest of the console identical, would that prevent this one area of weakness?

The other weakness is lack of VR. Microsoft seems to be completely neglecting VR while Sony literally devoted half their reveal yesterday to the VR concept of Presence. Sony seems to realize that creating revolutionary and truly immersive experiences is the next evolution of gaming. Presence will be a more beloved leap than the jump from 2D to 3D was, once it is achieved and Sony is likely to pull it off while Microsoft is left behind for the following reasons...

    1. 25 MBPS is enough to reliably stream 4k content at 30fps. Wifi Direct allows streaming speeds of 250 MBPS! Thats enough bandwidth to reliably stream to two different 4K displays at 120 fps with an extra 50 MBPS of headroom as well. Wifi Direct will allow PS VR 2 to be completely wireless, akin to the Oculus Quest.
    2. Rumors state that the PS5 has a custom dual band quad antenna wifi direct chip inside that will wirelessly output to the PSVR2's dual 4K resolution RGB stripe OLED displays (one per each eye to completely eliminate the screendoor effect) at 120hz and with extremely low latency that uses predictive algorithms to decrease latency further. As a result, PS VR 2 will be a completely wireless experience akin to the Oculus Quest but it will have far superior graphics than the Oculus Quest as long as you have a PS5 in the same room as the PS VR 2 headset.
    3. Rumors also state that the PS VR2 has custom hardware inside the headset (eye tracking cameras and inside out tracking) that enable foveated rendering so that 9TFs and wifi direct bandwidth is sufficient to generate lifelike graphics (since they only have to be rendered in full resolution in the area of the display that lies exactly opposite to the person's fovea).
    4. Haptics is a big feature of the PS5 controller and the PS VR2 is also rumored to feature haptic feedback glove VR controllers that use microfilaments specially designed such that it can perfectly and indistinguishably simulate the feel of touching real human skin.

Remember how excited the world was by the Nintendo Wii. PS VR 2 and it's Haptic Glove Controllers are going to make the Wii look like a typewriter in the age of computers.

But Microsoft could easily match and even surpass Sony in the VR front by making an external dual band quad antenna wifi direct chip that can plug into the back of the Series X to allow it to broadcast the games to dual 4k displays.

Microsoft could then either manufacture it's own VR headset, or it could partner with either Oculus, HTC or Valve to make their cutting edge 4K VR headsets compatible with the Series X.

Why can't you play series x games on ext ssd?

So the external seagate ssd for xbox is usb3.0 with 500mbps read and write speed right? I have two of them and i see alot of people saying "its because the external ssds are too slow to play games on,you can only play series x or enhanced one x games on internal or the seagate expansion ssd card" but alot of external ssds are fast enough? No?

Xbox series X|S alternative high speed storage expansion

    Hi,

No, sorry it won't work. The USB ports on the Series X|S are USB 3.1 which have a maximum speed of 500MB/s. This means, no matter what drive you buy, no matter what speed it's rated at, you're stuck at the max speed of the USB port.

The only drives that can be used for Series X|S games are either the internal or the storage expansion card.

I have the Expansion card for my Series X. I also have an external 2TB USB SSD in an enclosure. I can only use the external SSD for Xbox One games. They do load a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive, but I can't play my Series X games off it.

Why can’t I play games direct from seagate hard drive??

Series S. it seems to be any game. I haven’t found one I can play directly from the hard drive yet. In honesty I haven’t tried many but seemed odd that I haven’t found any yet?
The only games that would be directly playable from an HDD would be Xbox one games.

Xbox Series X/S games can only be stored but not played from an external HDD. Those can only be played from either the internal ssd or one of the WD or Seagate expansion ssd's that plug into the back.

The reason is the Xbox Series X/S games are setup to take advantage of the speed of the internal ssd. For comparison Internal SSD has raw read speeds of 2.4 GB/s whereas HDDs would only be a max of 500 MB/s.

why does my xbox one x say my ssd is too slow

It should br noted the speed requirements is jlnot just limited go the port

Thr read ANd write speeds count not all hdds and ssd are created equal

    And sometimes it's the cable

And what does it say on the back of your console you sure its a xbox one x or a series x

If it's a series x (there is no ONE in the series name) then no hdd will be fast enough

    Choosing a hardrrive

Fair enough, a slow internet connection is as good excuse as any.

Be aware however that while that drive will work on Series X, you won't be able to play Series X games directly from it. Series X games will require faster access and read speeds. My understanding is that the Series X games can be 'backed up' on an external
drive and then need to copied/moved over to either the internal SSD or the External SSD's that will be available for the machine.

The Series X will read and play Xbox One games from an external drive though.
