There is a difference between a first person game and a first person shooter.

Butcher Bay isn't a 'shooter', its entire mechanics are based around the sneaking and silent aspects of the Riddick character.

When people say shooter I think of something like Call of Duty, Medal of Honour, or Battlefield.

Butcher Bay worked because you weren't blocked from progress by lack of firearms.

I've been waiting for about 8 years now for the FPS "trend" to come to an end. No luck so far.
I would love a shooter with limited ammo. Youd have to make everyshot count. Few ammo dumps and taking ammo from a body you have to search which takes time and leaves you vulnerable. That'll make you think twice about running
over that guy you just killed to get his bullets
I like games like that as well. You should try Metro 2033 Redux if you haven't as it is just like that. I actually like it when you get far and you're out of ammo and you really have to get creative to progress on a level. I totally prefer it like this than
when ammo is everywhere.

Yes Vaynel I agree that Riddick isnt exactly a shooter. I was just using as an example of stealth or melee combat that works well. No reason why a shooter cant employ that as an option. Too many games use that spray and pray tactic. Especially in multiplayer.
I want something a little more tactical. I guess maybe a new genre. First person tactical combat squad sim. More like the rainbow six from the books than the games.

I wish some of the Scific shooters would go back to unlimited ammo but overheating the barrel like mass effect 1. ME 2 just add bullets to the game with a technobs name.

Story does matter regardless of the time period. Halo/Call of Duty stories have been hit or miss with each release.

6. ^ Always thought Halo got the story spot on (except ODST and Reach, the should never have happened haha) You've got to remember COD's singleplayer is probably the last thing they slap together to go along side to PvP, not sure why they still bother Are sci-fi military shooters a trend, this console generation? Am I the only one concerned? ;)

7. Reach is my favourite of the series. Great combat, the game lets you customise Noble Six, and it had a epic finale that showed that while we may lose the battle, we will win the war. (this Bioware is how you do a bittersweet ending.)

Futuristic shooters have always been around, but the history of the market does lean towards more futuristic shooters. WWII shooters were abound, then came the more modern shooters that we're all familiar with now, and now we're looking towards the future.

Personally I think that the futuristic stuff gives developers a lot more freedom (I'm not a fan of the jet-pack spamming though).

9. @Eggnogga I doubt FPS gaming will ever stop being popular. If anything it's going to continually grow.

I would absolutely LOVE it if blizzard made an fps game in the eyes of a marine in starcraft!!! Always loved starcraft but that would be my dream game. Or one where you alternate between a marine, or goliath or siege tank. Just imagine playing this battle
in an fps game
