Are digital purchases still tied to a console, or a gamertag?

I was wondering what changes the Xbox One had made to this? If I purchased digital games on my console, will they still work on it if my gamertag was no longer linked to it? Or does it have to be set as the "home" console for my gamertag in order for others
to use the games?

Only digital purchases are tied to a Microsoft account. Physical copies of discs cannot be "tied" to an account. You will either need to get those physical discs back if those games ever become available to backwards compatibility, or you would need to purchase
the digital licenses for those games. You are unable to swap physical games for digital titles and vice versa.

The games will still be tied to your account. You cannot transfer ownership to anyone else and it is against the rules to sell digital games. So a new owner may have access to the games if the console licenses are still on that console, but if you were to
perform a license transfer to another 360 or they have to get a new console, they will lose access to those games.

Since the games are tied to your account, you will be able to redownload them and play them on tje One even if you no longer have your 360.

 

What is a difference between how licenses work on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One?

On the Xbox 360 there are licenses on the console itself, when there are no licenses connected to the Xbox One console

How content licenses are made available on a Xbox One console?

When the owner account is signed into Xbox Live on a Xbox One console or when the licenses owner has specified the console as Home console and connected to Xbox Live.

 

So, basically, the bottom line is, someone couldn't just sell a console and all the digital games attached to it, if their gamertag was no longer linked. Sharing only works as long as it is set as "home".

weird cause i was confused i just bought a used xbox one for my son and i brought it home theres no account logged in so i logged into the same account my son uses on his 360 and immediately went to games and apps and noticed there are 7 games already on
the xbox one like limbo, minecraft, titanfall, and halo master chief collection. anyway i came here to try and figure out why those games are there?

 

@Meek, when he is logged in has he gone onto the settings screen and on the right at the bottom has he selected "Set this as your Home Console" (or something like that) option?

If he hasn't and it wouldn't happen unless hes done it, you will be using the old users content.

(If you want unofficial access then don't change the home setting, but don't expect to have access for ever.)

 

Gamertag, with your new unit just make it "my xbox one" in the settings and you should be able to download your purchases.

 

@Meek - just to confirm, the person who sold you the console has basically left it configured as their "Home" console, hence why you can see and play his games.

The moment the seller sets another X1 as their "Home" console you'll no longer be able to play those games of his.

 

^^ what Satsumo said, enjoy the free games while you can, you never know if the previous owner will buy another console.

 

ok thanks for all the answers i was confused why so much hdd room was available and why i was able to use the games.. i called the previous owner today to let him know and he said its fine if my son uses the games that his kids wont be getting another xbox
anytime soon they are more into playing their ps4 for now.
