    Appearing offline regardless of online status settings.


    Hi, I changed my gamertag a few days ago and ever since then none of my friends can see me online. I have an xbox 360 and an xbox one and I checked the settings on both consoles and both are showing that I should appear online.

    New Xbox Experience - appear offline?

    In the previous dash it had a dropdown box with 'appearing online' and 'appear offline' along with a status to the left that showed how you appeared to everyone else. Now in the new xbox dash it shows a box which changes between appear online and appear offline, with no status. So my question is whether 'appear online' showing on the button is my current status meaning I am showing as online, or what the button will do if I select it, meaning I am currently offline? I've tried going on the xbox 360 with an alternate profile to check it but it doesnt seem to make a difference.

    When you are signed in to your Xbox Live-enabled profile, you can change your "presence" or “online status" information. To do this, follow these steps:

    Press the Xbox Guide button to display the Xbox Guide.

    Select Settings.

    Select Preferences.

    Select Online Status.

    To set how you appear to other players when you are online, select one of the following options:

    Online

    Away

    Busy

    Appear Offline

    It is already set to appear online and I have switched it back and forth to see if that would fix it, but I'm still showing offline

    It is already set to appear online and I have switched it back and forth to see if that would fix it, but I'm still showing offline

    What is the best settings for playing online on xbox live?

    Depends on what you feel like doing. If you want friends to know you're online, set your status to "online". If not, appear "offline". You can still send/ recieve messages/ invites when appearing offline.

    I actually solved the issue, and it was the appear online thing...IT is VERY misleading because when you go on your profile, if the button shows "appear Online" then you are actually appearing offline...Click on it so that it says "appear offline" .

    So basically it doesn't show your current online/offline status, it shows what you can set it to.

    I'm appearing online, yet everyone sees me as offline; I see everyone as offline, when they are not; and more++!

    If you set your profile on "show online" and still appear as "offline" please also check your privacy settings as there is an item "allow others to see my online status" which may override your setting if it's configured to hide your status from all.
