to watch movies from my external hard drive on XBOX One, you will have have to divide the drive in to smaller partitions ,i noticed that XBOX One and 360 can read a 128gig USB thumb drive, then i tried this and it works

I have a 2T My Passport USB 3.0 drive . and create smaller partitions works fine, I actually split the drive equally on a 2.0 USB external drive and that worked also

not sure what is the largest partition it will read I will keep experimenting

Yes, you can do this. All you need to do is create a Fat32 partition using a program like AOMEI Partition Assistant. It is very simple to do and will take somewhere around 10 minutes to complete if you don't have to defragment the hard drive first. Using
a tool like this or a similar one, shrink the existing partition down the amount that you want to have for Xbox 360 storage space (maximum of 32GB). Once you have done this, you will see unallocated space for the amount you shrunk the partition for. Right
click this and create partition. Select type as Fat32 and Primary. Make sure it is PRIMARY. After this, just apply the changes and plug it into your Xbox when it finishes and you will have your storage device ready to go.

I'm not sure what file system the Xbox One uses, but you should be able to use a similar method for that if you even have to for the Xbox One.

I'm glad I came upon this information. I was successfully able to make a 32GB FAT32 partition, for the Xbox, on my 1TB external hard drive without losing any information (in my case, 600GB worth). As for me. there was a snag when it came to the Xbox recognizing
just the 32 GB FAT32 partition after formatting, using Disk Management in Windows 7.

Instead I would receive the "The device isn't formatted, or the format isn't recognized. To continue, the device must be formatted, and all content will be removed. Do you want to continue?" message after selecting customize. In other words, don't proceed
if you've received this message, you will more than likely lose all the information previously stored on the hard drive.

The partition made has to be primary instead of logical, in my case the default formatting to FAT32 made it logical. I used AOMEI Partition Assistant Home Edition in order to make that 32GB FAT32 partition primary as Windows 7 Disk Management doesn't give
this option.

Plugged it into the Xbox, selected the storage device, selected customize, and instead of the formatting message I received the slider option to allocate storage space on just the 32GB partition. No other information was lost or formatted.
