I'm not 100% certain on what you mean by extract one account from another and leave the old on intact, but I'm going to do my best to see if this helps.

You can move any Xbox account (GT-A) that is tied to a Microsoft account (MS-A) to a different Microsoft account (MS-B). And, yes to do so, you would take the second Microsoft account (MS-B) and have it become the new login for the gamertag (GT-A). The
specific steps can be seen
here.

Once you've moved the gamertag to the new login, you would then have the old Microsoft account (MS-A) available to do as you want to create a new account.

If you are trying to move the Xbox account (GT-A) from one Family (Parental Microsoft) account to another Family account, that is something different, but still easy to do. You would first have to remove the account from the family
it is currently in (see the steps
here) and then add the tag to a new family (see the steps
here). By doing so, the first family account it was under will still remain intact, it just won't have the other account the manage anymore.

you cant transfer anything from one account to another, the xbox account IS the microsoft account. they cannot be merged in anyway.

It is possible that this gamertag is tied to another Microsoft account that is not active on Xbox Live or the gamertag is one that had been withheld by Microsoft for another reason and this will prevent you from being to claim the gamertag.

You should refer to the link A Bamboo Eater posted. Changing the Microsoft account associated with your son's gamer tag will transfer all information to the new account (gold status , profile data, Microsoft points etc)

1.On your Xbox 360 console, sign in using your son's Xbox LIVE gamertag.

2. Go to Settings and select Account.

3. Scroll right to Your Information and select Account Security.

4. When you account information is displayed, select Change Microsoft account.

5 If you have another Microsoft account, select Yes, I do. If you do not have another Microsoft account, go to login.live.com to sign up for a new Microsoft account.

6.Enter the password for the Microsoft account that is currently associated with your gamertag, and then select Sign in.

7.. Enter the email address and the password for the new Microsoft account that you want to associate with your gamertag, and then select Sign in.

8 Select Yes, change to change the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox LIVE account.

or was everything created fresh for him?
