Any way to get Xbox 360E to recognize more than 32GB on external drives?

At the suggestion of another member who answered the question (but I want to make sure), I'm posting a NEW message rather than piggybacking on an older one.

I bought an Xbox 360E used and refurbished on Ebay. I love it. I came with a 120GB drive, but since I like to install games to use less DVD access (noise) and buy games on demand, the drive is filling up quickly. I would love to buy a 1-3 TB HD,
but the responder told me that if I put it in an external case and connected it the Xbox USB port, it would only see 32GB even if I partition the drive into multiple 32GB partitions.

Is there any other way around this? I would buy the largest Xbox drive for this model (I think somewhere around 340GB), but fear it still won't be enough. I just wish there was a way to take out the primary drive (my model has a clip on drive to the
side of the Xbox) and put in a larger system drive. Since I bought it used, there's no warranty to void. Of course, you folks can't answer that on this board as it is an official MS site.

However, please tell me if the other member was correct that no matter what size external HDD I would plug into the USB port would not be recognized beyond 32GB. Thank you in advance,

    :)

GTA V Will not open after download. Gives me error saying Game cannot start, please download it again.

First the 360 only recognizes up to 32GB of external storage. Is the device FAT32? And has it been formatted for use on the xbox 360?

I put in a 64 GB flash drive into my xbox 360 and suddenly I realize I have 59.4 GB free?

Hi Techno, the 32GB limit for external storage on Xbox 360 has actually been changed. In a system update earlier this year, the limit was raised to 2TB. That is the reason why more than 32GB is showing up, it's not a glitch as you feared.

Any way to get Xbox 360E to recognize more than 32GB on external drives?

There's a couple of things here that I want to let you know about your post.

    1. The person you spoke with was almost correct. External USB devices will only grant you a maximum of 16GB per device. You can use two at one time for a total of 32GB of storage space.

    support.xbox.com/.../usb-flash-drive

How you mix and match them is up to you.

    2. Now, regarding your 360E console. Congratulations on purchasing one from Ebay. However, you state that it is refurbished and has a 120GB drive. I have some bad news for you.

Microsoft does not offer refurbished consoles except in the case of warranty repairs. If you purchased a refurbished one that was not repaired by Microsoft it could be considered modded and could result in the console being banned from the Live service
    if caught.

Part two of this is the hard drive that it came with. There is no official 120GB drive available for the 360S or 360E consoles. The only official hard drive sizes are 250Gb or 320GB. This means that the hard drive was modded as well and, again, if caught
could have the console being banned from the Live service.

Sorry to provide the bad news to you but it's better to be safe than sorry. I would recommend seeing if you can return the console for a refund and purchase one from an authorized dealer to avoid issues in the future.

onyx - There was an update a couple of years ago that changed the limit from 16g to 32gb per device. Even the article you posted mentions you can format a flash drive up to 32gb.

My mistake. However, the basic gist remains for what I've said about the console.

  7. Not really onyx. The op states that his hard drive is one that clips on to the side. I believe that he is referring to an Xbox 360 Elite. He may have stated it wrong but a clip on hard drive of 120gb sound about right for an Elite.

SoulPlum, the old style hard drives have been discontinued but you may be able to find one up to 250gb if you look hard enough. I believe that was the biggest size the old clip on hard drives came in. Anything else would not be official and might not work
    right down the line.

Any way to get Xbox 360E to recognize more than 32GB on external drives?

Thanks for the replies. Sorry about the mixup on the model. I thought everyone would know 360E was the Elite model. I bought it from a reputable dealers on EBay...no mods. I have no problems with this online and have had it for over 6 months now.

The 360 Elite DID come with a 120 GB clip-on hard drive. I just find it sad that MS didn't allow for larger hard drives. I won't plunk down the $$$ for an Xbox one because of the reviews I've read online. I'm surprised that MS has designed such an expensive
device and tried to make it do everything. Hello? Smart TVs are coming down in price all the time, and my Samsung bluray player surfs the net, has YouTube, Netflix, etc. I hope I don't offend anyone ( besides getting off-topic), but if I buy a gaming console,
I don't want one that tries to do everything else as well AND has to have three operating systems as well to accomplish it! I think the designers were on drugs when they came up with that one.

Anyway, thank you all for the info. It's not exactly what I wanted to hear, but maybe I can find a used clip on drive on EBay.
