There are multiple ways to purchase a digital title with a credit card. The easiest is simply attempting to purchase the title. As you move through the checkout process, you will be prompted to select a form of payment. Here is where you may select 'add
a payment option' and proceed to add your desired form of payment.

Is this a Microsoft balance or some other form of payment?

Yes, it is a contractual subscription service the same as a mobile phone or television service. Microsoft needs a verified form of payment that can be regularly billed the same as any other subscription service.

Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We see you are having issues with a card. Unfortunately, prepaid cards are not a good form of payment for the consoles. The reason for this is it is not a guaranteed form of payment, like a credit/debit card. You can
try adding it to a PayPal account then use the PayPal since you have no other form of payments.
