    I am looking at getting an external drive. I am just wondering if it is better to get a self powered drive or can the XBOX handle the additional power consumption of a USB powered drive?

    Xbox USB HDD random HDD disconnections.

    All is USB 3.0 drives with USB 3.0 cables.

    All is USB powered 2.5" drives.

    It could be power unstability or something in USB ports on Xbox One of course.

    External powered 3.5" could probably work better.

    External power on HDD could of course make the drives more stable. I could replace them with a external 4.TB later.

    I personally prefer the self powered external HDD. Over the years I have had better luck with those drives that provide their own power and don't pull the power from the USB bus.

    You can get whichever type you want. I have a USB powered drive and have experienced no issues with it.

    sounds like a faulty cable or faulty hdd. is it a self powered or external powered hdd.
