  1. Another External HDD Problem... But This Problem is Different

I have a 2TB External HDD formatted for my games and apps, its a standard My Passport Ultra by WD, had it for a while now. However this is not the issue I'm currently having... About a year ago I decided to get away from OneDrive for uploading all my movie
and TV show rips because I wanted to be able to watch my stuff if I'm ever off of the internet. So I decided to get a 1TB My Passport Ultra to use for all my media, formatted it to NTFS and moved all my media from the cloud to the drive, to this day works
flawlessly. Obviously as the media collection grew bigger, it was time to expand the memory... So I picked up yet another My Passport Ultra, this time a 2TB drive. Formatted it to NTFS, put 1 movie on the drive to test in on the Xbox One... didn't work. Told
me no media files found, yet the Xbox read the external hard drive and recognized it as a media device. I figured it was nothing and went ahead and copied all my media files from the 1TB drive to the 2TB drive on my computer (even included the 'WPSystem' file
the Xbox creates on the media drive), took about 9 hours and once it was done hooked it back up to the Xbox... still no dice. It has been about a week now with probably 20 failed attempts to get the Xbox to read this thing. Absolutely nothing is different
between my 1TB and 2TB media drives, both formatted exactly the same from the same computer, same files on it, same everything except color and memory size. Yet the Xbox reads the 1TB perfectly and refuses to read the 2TB, MEANWHILE it is still technically
seeing it as a media device, just with nothing on it. My computer reads it perfectly and plays all the files.

Before giving me advice, I should add that I did completely wipe the 2TB drive out in frustration, had to recreate the partitions and everything using Windows Devices and Printers. Once I formatted in NTFS again a few times, readded all the files, yet another
9 hours, Xbox still read the fact that there was an external hooked up, but with nothing on it. I also tried switching USB ports, tried both in the back and the one on the side, nothing. Of course putting all your media files on an external hard drive for
convenient access is just TOO convenient... Ugh. Keep in mind, I DO still have the 2TB plugged in that's used for my games and apps during all this. I have tried unplugging it and only using the 2TB media drive, still doesn't work, so I know its not the game
and app dedicated drive that's causing any problems.

First world problem I'm aware, but I really need some help as this is bothering me immensely. I have never heard anything about the X1 putting a limit on the storage size of a media drive, so I'm assuming that isn't really a possibility. I mean the one and
only difference between the 1TB and 2TB media drives I have is the size... same format, same files, same everything. It took me a lot of time to rip all this media I have and I'm only a couple files away from having to retire the 1TB drive and move on to the
2TB, but first I really need to figure out why this just isn't working. I know the chances of me getting a full on explanation of why it isn't working is slim to none, as surprisingly not many people use external hard drives for their movie and tv rips...
but at least a reason why it isn't working or why it wont work period would ease my mind a bit too. just hoping someone may have an answer for me so I can get this thing working. Thank you in advance.

    :)

    External Storage

These might help you identify the problem:

    1. Power the Xbox One down completely and plug the external drive into a different USB port on the Xbox One. Power the Xbox back on and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's that particular USB port that's the issue.

    2. If the external HDD has a power cord, try plugging it into a different outlet. If it's plugged into a surge protector, try plugging it directly into a wall (temporarily, just to see if the power is the issue).

    3. Last option -- move your data on the external HDD to your internal HDD, and reformat it. I doubt this is the problem, but occasionally I've seen this work.

Hey there fellow captain Another External HDD Problem... But This Problem is Different :)

I'm sorry to hear about the issue. I would try to connect the drive to the back USB port of the console and see if that makes any difference. The drive should work fine on it and should cause problems like this. If you want to make sure the drive is operating
properly I would download and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. Here's a link:

  5. I'm having the same problem. I have a 5 TB drive that is formatted NTFS and contains media. It worked before and now after hooking the Xbox up to my projector system it reads the storage as media, but empty. My computer sees it fine and can play files. Everything
works. It recently underwent a 130 GB delete operation of some old file backups that were on the drive. They only accounted for a small portion of it though and were present when the drive was first working. I have attempted both USB ports on the back too.

Hello there! Are you using an external HDD? If so, sometimes changing it to a different USB port can fix the problem.
