Annual Xbox One releases with upgraded hardware

I have not really seen it mentioned but to me the obvious advantage to Xbox consoles going Windows 10 is that now very regular hardware upgrades could be a practical possibility.

The great thing about DirectX on the Pc is that you can configure a game easily to find the best visuals and framerate that your hardware is capable of. When the Xbox is running Windows 10 then new games could detect the Xbox version and apply whatever
developer configured preset gives the best experience for the console it is installed on.

A game installed on a current gen console might be 30fps @ 900p but when installed on say the 2016 Xbox run at 60fps @ 1080p or even 4k. Gone will be the 5-10 year console cycle, instead there will just be the Xbox where everything works fine in older
systems but works even better in newer systems. . The developer creates the PC version then all they have to do for the Xbox version is determine the the preset quality configuration that will automatically be chosen for the hardware of the console it is installed
on.

Why would you get release hardware? That's you problem, you should have waited until they release a new Xbox One. Just like with the Xbox 360.

at time of release for Xbox One, 4k tvs where not in majority of gamers households making the hardware 4k compatible would not be worthwhile.

I got the Xbox One S before upgrading my TV to 4k but the difference is noticeable

With every console cycle you get an upgraded / slim version so should be expected that at some point we would get a Slim and Scoprio model

Also 8k is a thing so in another couple of years will probably have upgrade again

 

Not going to happen and would make a lot of people angry if it did.

Games for a particular console should run exactly the same on all consoles.

It would also be likely to lower sales of consoles as people would think whats the point of buying an xbox one now when I can have a more powerful one in a couple of years.

Also it would make it more difficult for developers to fix bugs as with everyone having different hardware configurations it would be a pain to keep track of bugs that only effect certain configurations.

You would be better off buying a PC or one of those steam machines if you want to upgrade every year

 

God , please no. Gaming is already bleeding me dry , I would refuse to do this if they choose it. Like the spurned orc prince said, get a PC.

 

Yep. the reason I gave up on PC gaming was the fact I felt forced to upgrade every year or two just to get the best graphics in games.

Now I'm a console gamer I don't have to worry about that

 

I could only see this happening every 3 or 4 years. It would be a good way to extend the life of the console, but doing it every year would be way too expensive for the consumer.

 

The thing with consoles is that they are best at being commodity hardware. Manufacturers know that the type of consumer who buys a console isn't interested in upgradeable hardware, except maybe hard disk space. The solution to this is something that console
manufacturers are already doing: keep tweaking and updating the dev tools to allow developers to do stuff they couldn't have done with a previous version of the software.

A XB1 game made in 2015, with the tools available at the time, should run in both a console produced in 2015 as well as one made in 2013. This is the power of commodity hardware.
